Cleaning fuel filter canister

Last time i changed my fuel filter i looked down in there and there was some gunk(light brown color) in the bottom. i couldnt get my fingers down in there with a shop towel and even tried a shop vac in there but it was stuck to the bottom to good to pick it up(had to get my little sis to hold the shop vac up on my bumper to reach). how can i get this stuff out next time i change it? and with that gunk in there do yall recommend droppin the tank for a good cleaning? is it a PITA to remove the whole canister for cleaning?

Are you sure the shop vac hose got all the way to the bottom? I insert a smaller hose into the shop vac hose and duct tape the two together. I wouldn't think there would or should be anything in there that solid. Be careful for the water in filter sensor.

I use those wood stick long Q-Tips. Leave the drain valve open and spray brake clean while using the Q-Tip. Don't try to drop the canister it is more complicated than it looks. My humble opinion and good on ya for keeping it clean.
