Can someone explain Diesel L.S. vs Diesel H.S.?

Hello everyone,

I spend lots of time reading the posts and have learned a lot!! I am a first time diesel owner and find this source to be incredibly valuable thanks to all of you!

I hope you can help me with this question. I went to the pump tonight to fill up ($2.799 here in Richmond, VA) and when I got there I saw two markers on the pump. One stated "Diesel L.S." and the other stated "Diesel H.S." Both of them had a Cetane Rating of 40. I wasnt' sure what to do so I went in and asked the attendant what that meant, she said "Diesel Low Speed" and "Diesel High Speed". I wasn't sure what to do, she said that the L.S. was for your regular type diesel trucks like ours and the H.S. was for dump trucks and the like. Can anyone verify this for me?

I was thinking maybe it meant Low Sulfur and High Sulfur, but again, I wasn't sure. I filled up with the L.S. and added a fuel conditioner.

I'm also taking up a collection for the full tank I just bought, $88.77 for 31+ gallons. In case ya'll didn't hear, the head of Exxon is retiring, his severance package is worth $400 million!! Keep those pumps going, I'd hate for his family to go hungry!

Thanks for any help you can give!

After a little Google-ing here is what I found:

LS #1 / LS #2 = Low Sulfer Diesel Fuel

HS #2 = Heating Oil (High Sulfur #2 )
HS#2WB =Heating Oil (High Sulfur #2 ) Winter blend

LSPD = Low Sulfur Premium Diesel
LSPDWB = Low Sulfur Premium Diesel Winter Blend
LS#2WB = Low Sulfur #2 Diesel Winter blend

Here is a better explaination: http://www.masstransitmag.com/public...pubId=1&id=340

You are correct on the Low Sulfur and the High Sulfur. Both of the fuels technically could be ran in your truck but from a legality standpoint you can only run the Low Sulfur. High Sulfur is what is also called "Off-Road" Diesel. This is specifically for equipment such as backhoes, loader, dozer, etc. It is cheaper than the Low Sulfur, but puts out more emissions so DOT requires that you run the Low Sulfur, also called "On-Road" Diesel. There is also Farm Diesel which is red, that again you can technically run in your truck, but not legally on the highway...hope this helps.
