Can someone please explain.....

how the resonater works, and, is it flow through or restrictive.

Thanks!

BTW, here's a very informative link that I run across.

It's pretty much just flow-through, it's on there just to cut down on the noise and that's it. The bonus to it being if you live some where that has laws requiring a muphler the resonater will count as one.

The resonator is designed to dampen the exhaust pulses coming out of the engine, thus lowering the noise level somewhat. I can't really see any use for them on a vehicle with a turbo on it but I guess someone does. They are pretty much straight through. The one I took of my 99, you could almost put you fist through it.

Re:Can someone please explain.....

Here's my theory, and I'm sticking to it.

When Cummins changed over from the 12 valve to the 24 valve, Dodge decided they didn't need the Catalytic Converter anymore, since 24 valve's ran cleaner than the 12 valve.
When they removed it from the exhaust, they found an annoying drone resonating through the exhaust system.
The decided a little mini muffler inserted where the Cat used to be might fix this, and it did.

There you have it.

Well if you're going to get all technical about it. :

Re:Can someone please explain.....

OK....here's Webster's defination of "Resonator"
--[to resound], a device for producing resonance or increasing sound by resonance.

"Resonance" intensification and prolongation of a sound by reflection or by vibration of a near by object.

Everything I have found leans toward increasing or intensifying and prolonging sound Oh well....I'm still gonna leave the thing off (muffler too) when it comes time to replace. ;D

Thanks

Re:Can someone please explain.....

The catalytic converter and a resonator are two entirely different units. As said a resonator reduces the pulses and lowers the sound thus stopping the dreaded drone at 2,000-2,300 rpm. The catalytic converter is a smog required item and is very restrictive but even so I dynoed over 500hp with the cat on to win a bet that I couldn't dyno over 350hp.

I feel the resonator is just more weight to pull down the chassis of the truck. Saying that, pull yours off along with the muffler and let her sing!
