I've heard the cam position sensor can be external or internal of the injector pump. Is there any way to know, without looking (COLD out there!) which place it would be on my truck. Also, any estimates on what replacement cost would be with either option? Truck has an intermittent stutter (usually under acceleration). Dealership mechanic says the cam sensor would probably light up the CEL and set a code,and that it's more likely transmission than motor/electrical. Dave Goerend's over-the-phone opinon is the position sensor is more likely the offending culprit. (He sure is an accomodating guy to talk to.) Just gotta get this truck fixed before hauling the 5er next summer.

 

Before you go into all that hootnanny, check this place. Look at the compressor lines from under the truck where you would normally change the oil filter. Check for a chaffed wire grounding on the A/C lines. That wire supplies 5 volts to a couple of things including the cam sensor. Tape it up an put some plastic wire loom over it. There was a sticky at the top of this page with pictures.

Been there, done that. Saw the sticky and one of the first things I did when this problem raised its ugly head was check the wires, tape them individually, and put a plastic loom over the entire harness. This saga has also led me to replace the TPS, fan clutch, govenor pressure sensor, and extra ground straps from the motor to the frame. Each of which has resolved it's particular issue, but hasn't fixed the stutter. I've driven the truck with the tech in the passenger seat watching the star scanner/monitor. When the stutter occurs there's not been anything noticable indicated on the scanner. It's been a very frustrating 2+ years and has led to the original post.
