Replacing the Cam Position Sensor while VP44 is Out

So my original VP44 has finally started to fail. (138,000+ miles not so bad) I am having it replaced this week and have read that while the pump is out it's a great time to replace the camshaft position sensor. With only 138,000 miles on the engine is this really necessary? I have had no issues with the sensor. Thank you all in advance for your advices.

For the $45 or so the sensor costs, I would go ahead and do it. You will hate yourself if it fails and you hadn't replaced it. It's a very easy change with the pump out; considerably more difficult to do with the pump in place.

I've got my spare sensor ready for replacement the next time the VP comes out. Probably overkill but it's not that costly of an item. I did manage to get a socket on the sensor hold down bolt so it's not impossible to remove it. Just way easier with the pump outta there!
