Help with cam position sensor on 02

Hi everybody. I'm new here, been TDR member since 2002, recently discovered this site, so I'm in. I think I have a foulty CPS, as my tach is cutting off, freezes, than works o.k. for a while... check eng.light is on and truck sets 1694 ,1693 and 1698 codes. One dealer diagnosed it as bad PCM, but after I bought new one, still the same problem. So now they said CPS and maybe ECM. I'm going with the sensor first hoping that's the problem, as it is a lot cheaper. Have someone experienced something like that on 02 truck, 6speed? Thanks

So, nobody ever replaced that sensor before. I guess I'll be first. I'll let you know what happens, guys and girls. I hope it's the CPS. Ilian

Mine has been replaced but was done at the dealer. I think the Cam Position Sensor was only on the '01 and '02's so maybe the reason why you are not getting an answer. Since it is behind the injection pump it is a bear to replace without removing it. I would have done it myself but the IP got warranted. Actually I think that is the real reason the IP was replaced.

Forgot to mention that mine would start very hard when cold but only part of the time. Would put out lots of black/blue smoke when it was hard to start, otherwise OK the times it started normally. Once started in the AM it would start the rest of the day. I don't recall the codes that were showing and don't recall any of the difficulties you are having with the tach but it has been about 3 years. Did have the check engine light. Mine had a crack in it.

O.K. Just an update. Had the CPS replased by the dealer, and still the same codes. Seems to be the ECM, which was the other thing on the list, and hopefully that will do it. Pretty expensive, but truck needs to work perfect, it puts bread on the table. Thanks to everione that responded. Ilian
