Haven't heard of any plans for the CA DMV to initiate smogging of diesels. As the 2007 emissions kick in and new trucks are sold that meet that standard, it probably becomes less of an issue IMO. Regardless, if they were to choose to eventually smog I'm not sure it would really be any more of a problem than getting a gasser smogged. In Colorado I had my '95 CTD 12V smogged and it passed just fine at altitude. However, it did lighten my wallet by about $50 for the test.

When I bought my 2004.5 it came with a sticker on the lower left windshield saying: "Colorado Emission Exempt Vehicle". So even in Colorado who smogs diesels my 2004.5 was already emission exempt. Might be due to the CAT and being 50 state emission legal.

However, I think anyone who has a highly modded/bombed truck could experience emissions problems where it is required to be smogged. Otherwise, it is just an added expense and time investment as a stock Cummins seems to burn pretty clean as far as diesels go.

You're right, it's really all about the money, but they do operate under the guise of either environmentalism or public safety.

Yep, that was another lesson-learned. My truck weighted in at 7020 lbs. initially, and I didn't realize it cost another $54/year being over 7000 lbs. So I re-weighed it with everything out of the truck and empty fuel tank and got it re-registered just below that 7000 lbs. limit. Just had to carry in a new weight certificate to the DMV office.

I love blowing black smoke in Cali!

The best is when I'm coming back to CA with a tank full of diesel from AZ or NV, which isn't the same as CA diesel, so I can belch a lot more black smoke with out-of-state diesel. What I like to do if pull up on the left side of a Prius, then stab the go pedal and belch black smoke all over that little 'lectric car! Even with the CA diesel, I can sometimes get a good cloud of black smoke, especially when I'm towing.

I can't wait to get out of this God forsaken communist state and move back to the midwest!

It all boils down to this.

California is like a bowl of cereal. If you get rid of the fruits and nuts, all you got left is the flakes

I will march my azz down to the DMV once I get my tax return. We never filled out the date on the pink slip so I think I will be OK. What do yall think???????

I know I will have to pay the tax on 20K, weight fee, and the reg. Planning on $2,000

Yea I love tax......... I'd have to pay in if I was in any state....

BTW this is a non CA HO.............but its all good since CA is smog exempt for diesels

I just found out I woun't be able to register the CTD here in California if it is bought out of state and without the CA emissions. What a bunch of crap. Typical Republik of Kalifornia Krap.

Well if anyone has any experience with this please pass it on, I'm getting better quotes from out of state dealers.

Thanks in advance.
CA and Federal smog standards match for diesel pickups beginning with the '04 model year.('04 up have cat). I don't see shy out of state CTD's can't be registered here ('04 and up)
Cheers
