CA Emissions? Any experience?
What is the difference on a CTD on a Federal compliant and a CA compliant diesel?
I just found out I woun't be able to register the CTD here in California if it is bought out of state and without the CA emissions. What a bunch of
crap. Typical Republik of Kalifornia Krap.
Well if anyone has any experience with this please pass it on, I'm getting better quotes from out of state dealers.

Or you can just call it the Communist state of California. I've been stationed here for over 3 years and getting ready to leave. I won't ever come back. I had a 98 Z-71 that was registered in my wife's state of Ga. In her county I was not required to have emissions. When I got to California, my truck was still registered in Ga, and they still made me get an emissions because I was in California, even though I had Georgia Registration and tags. This place is unreal. Can not wait to leave for good.
you posted in 3rd gen so I would guess it is a newer truck.. If it is 2004 1/2 and up it is already california emissions legal.. If it is 2004 and down it has to be the SO output engine.. Look on the side of the valve cover and see if it says California emissions...
And by the way it isn't so bad here.. Weather is pretty good year round, We have An earthquake now and then but at least we don't get his by hurricanes and tornados...

I am also from a normal state, not from California. I have been stationed here for almost 20 months and hopefully leave here to go.....anywhere but here. I live in Kern county (North of LA) and don't have to have any on my pickup. My van easily passes, and it is a 1993. This place is unreal.
Been there, done that. I went through all this while buying my truck, talked to the DMV, dealers, etc., so here's what I found out:
1. If it's a NEW truck, a "CA" CTD is mechanically 100% identical to a CTD in any other state. The ONLY difference is that with a new "CA" CTD, every truck is individually emisisons tested at the factory and gets a CA CARB sticker under the hood, those are the ONLY differences.
2. If you're buying a USED truck from out of state, it must have at least 7500 miles on the odo before it can be registered in CA, but it doesn't matter if it's a "CA" truck or not.
3. You probably already know this one, but diesels never have to be smogged in CA in any circumstance.
4. You MUST get your truck weighed at a certified scale in order to register it. The DMV won't accept the manufacturer's stated weight on the title, the door sticker, or other specs. It must be weighed.
I bought my truck NEW from Tommeygun and drove it back to CA from St. Louis. Tommeygun had to special-order my truck from the factory as a "CA" truck, which just means the truck was smogged at the factory and got a CA CARB sticker under the hood.

I am not sure if you have to special order the truck with california emissions or not.. A guy at work bought his truck last year in Idaho from a large dealer and the sticker on the side of the valve cover said California emmisions on it..
Just check for that sticker before you try and bring it here..

Of course you will be able to register it in California!
I bought my '04 HO in Nevada because they were not available here in Cal. As I did with my '05 Passat TDI. Just wait six months and 7,500 miles. Go to the DMV and tell them it arrived here within the last 10 days. They will inspect it and license it. Done deal. If you bought it out of state and bring it in immediately there is a problem and if it is a model that is offered here and you bring it in right after the sale you'll be charged sales tax. Don't get pi$$ed, just know the rules and play the game. There is no way I'm gonna let California tell me what I can't have.

My truck with aux/toolbox combo fuel tank, nerf bars, GN hitch, etc. initially weighed in over the 7,001 lbs breakpoint. DMV said I could remove my non OEM toolbox and re-weigh. Rather than removing and un-plumbing the aux fuel/tool box I decided to put it on a diet instead. After the diet [removed spare tire, tailgate, tools, jack, floor mats, owner's manual, gum wrappers, etc. and having less than 3 gallons diesel in the tank] it weighed 6,980 lbs. Saved about $60 annually on registration by being below the 7,001 weight bracket.

Bringing in an out of state vehicle is not about "tree hugging". It's about taxes. Seems like every time someone has an issue with California they mention "tree huggers". Show me a politician in Cal. who has chained himself to a tree. Hmmmmm. I'm waiting. And while I'm waiting maybe you can explain how tree hugging has anything to do with an engine's exhaust or mileage.
