A/C failure
A/C failure
I have a problem with the A/C on 2004 Dodge 5.9Cummins ...made a long trip and found that the air volume will shut down (fan in full position) and control in normal vent position (not on max setting]....the air temp coming out of the vents is cool but not cold as normal. This occurs after I have driven for about three hours steady with the A/C on. I turned the unit off for about 10 minutes time and then turned it back on again and everything worked fine. I didn't stop and check to see if the A/C was iced or frozen up, I thought that kind of stuff went out years ago...I tried the search on the site but eith I am working it wrong or something because I can't find anything on it............any help thanks
I seem to remember some people who had a similar problem and found out that the factory had over-charged the A/C system. They took a bit of coolant out and never had the problem again. Something to check into anyways... isn't your truck under warranty?
Your probably low on 134A, your evap coil is freezing up and blocking off airflow. When you disengage the a/c button it will thaw out and then cool again until freezing back up. Mine is doing the same, I have a leak that cant be found (even w/ the dye in the system). Take er in and have it checked out.
In Nevada? I guess it's possible but the humidity is pretty low there isn't it? I run mine on recycle or Max a/c all the time here in humid Florida. Otherwise it never cools down and stays damp feeling. Around here condensation in the evaporator is a constant problem for buildings and vehicles if outside air is let in the cooled area.
I had a almost the same thing, on my 03 but didn't matter how much I drove it. It would just stop blowing cold air. I would just turn it off and then back on and it would work fine for awhile. Took it to the ******* and they said the main computer had shorted out for the air cond. they wanted $1400.00. Well I told them to forget it. This was at 97000 miles right after I hit 100,000 it started working fine. I now have over 111,000 and it is working fine.

I know this isn't an answer!!

Hey ! Thanks for the replies & possible causes, I agree with all, but I thought all that stuff on causing those type problems had been corrected over the years...Never had the same problem with any of my other trucks.. 98,2000,2002 2003 ..!! I think I'll take it in to the dealer and hope they have someone who can fix it..generally all you get is the standard answer "cannot duplicate the problem" It's still under warranty. again thanks to all

Hey Lowco...I'm taking it into the dealers on Monday, if they will listen I'll try and tell them about your information, and the others info too. Thanks a bunch, and keep on trucking !!
It says he replaced the a/c evaporator temperature sensor. It may not be a TSB with a number, I think he had to search the problem with the STAR system and found the fix. He also was telling me he had to relocate the sensor 12 fins over from where it was originally. The first time I took it in was a waste of both our time, because they did the typical a/c evacuation test and recharge that did nothing for the problem. Your gunna be without it for a whole day, cause they have to pull the entire dash and steering assymbly out to get to the evaporator coil.
Good Luck!

Happened to me too on a 2003. It was a bad fin sensor so the AC compressor ran all the time. Froze everything from the grill to the dash. Fin sensor was integral part of the evaporator (bad move by the design folks) so they had to replace the whole thing. Haven't had that problem since.
