Block Heater, etc. - Canada
Block Heater, etc. - Canada
For those interested;
For 2004, the Cummins engine comes standard with a block heater and cord. The cord is located at the front of the engine compartment on the passenger side, just to the outside of the radiator. It is held in place by a black plastic snap clip. The cord and the support structures are all black so it is a bit difficult to see. The dealer found it for me.
Also, after trying to disable the seat belt warning chime (by following the instructions in the owner's manual), I gave up and had the dealer do it. The mechanic hooked up a hand held computer to a connector under the dash (below the steering column) and found the "switch" under the "instrument panel" heading and disabled. No charge (of course). The light stays on (if you fail to buckle up), but the annoying bell is gone while trying to hook the truck up to the trailer (getting in and out of the truck).
Finally, I was concerned I had too much oil in my engine (reading was almost 3/4" above the top fill mark when I checked it). The dealer said they have received quite a few complaints about this. It seems that after waiting the required 5 minutes (after engine shut down), you need to insert and remove the dip stick quickly to check the level. If you leave it in too long, oil from the tube gets on the stick and shows a higher level. After being checked by the dealer (while I was watching), the oil level is perfect (3,000km).

About checking the oil; in my 03, it seems that I have to wait longer than 5 minutes for all the oil to drain back where it belongs to check the level. If I don't wait long enough, it'll read low.
Have you ever checked your oil level after its set all night long? You're implying that the level will read high. I'm not sure about that. Mine reads right on the full mark, each and every time, every morning I've checked.

Just out of curiosity, how is this any different from the '03 models? Doesn't sound any different from mine. ???

In Canada it's not because the Block heater w/cord is still a standard item. In the US, it's an extra $10 in '04 as it is now an option.

I wasn't commenting about the length of time you let the engine sit before checking it, but rather how long you insert the dipstick in before removing to read it. Of course if you let the truck sit all night and just pull the stick out, there won't be any oil in the dipstick tube to foul the reading up.

RE: Checking oil.....
When I picked my truck up in Bend Oregon from Thomas Sales and Service I was very nervous about ALL the oil levels in this truck....especially after reading the horror stories
here and on the TDR site. I had asked my sales person (Greg Theison, a super guy to work with!) to be sure and have the service people check the oil level carefully.
The oil in the engine was about a 1/2 inch above full when I checked it at the dealer. ??? Hmmmm.... Oh well it wasn't low!
I drove non-stop back to Las Vegas (about 900 miles) and checked it again the next morning after sitting all night. Still 1/2 inch above full....hmmmm.
I decided to change out the factory fill and replaced it with Delo. With Stratosphere and 3 gallons (total) of fresh oil it still was 1/2 inch above the full mark!
I figure that is where full is on my dipstick...I have gotten off the freeway and checked the oil while the motor is running and the oil looks like....oil....no issues that I can see..
BTW....I checked the diffs, TC, and tranny....all oil levels were purrfect! Good guys in the service dept at my dealer! ;D
