block heater amperage

Hey I just installed a block heater cord for my 05 dodge 2500 diesel. When I plugged it in my garage breaker (20 amp)tripped instantly in the shop. How many amps does it pull? Can the plug be installed wrong? Thanks

Is your outlet a GCFI? The heater is about 750 watts. 2400 watts would be 20 amps at 120 volts. Plug really can't be installed wrong but maybe it is shorting out somewhere or a bad heater?

i doubt theres anything wrong with the heater...check the cord again or you might have a weak breaker

My 2005 block heater pulls about 6.5 Amps or 700 Watts from 120 VAC.

Hope this helps

Mine pulls 6.5 to 7 amps. Can't run a toaster or coffee maker at the same time. It's probably a good idea to put it on a timer to start about 2 hours before you need your truck.

Here in Kansas I set mine to kick on 2-hours before I expect to start the truck

I bet something else that draws a lot of current is on the circuit.

The more often a breaker pops , the lighter the load it takes to pop later , they can wear out / become weak .
