Black Smoke

I have a 2006 CTD in a Mega cab, I have noticed that when keeping the acceleration at or under the 2K rpm range the truck runs great. The problem I have is that after about 2-3 start ups and running at that range, the truck will blow excessive black smoke if you accellerate over the 2K rpm range. If I drive the unit accellerating above the 2K range the black smoke is not there. Anyone else expieriencing this with their CTD. I have approx 4K miles on the truck.

I think the truck is just telling you......"Don't baby me!!" "Romp on me a little bit and let me clear out my kitty"

Mine did that too when I first got it. I suspect your engine is just trying to break in some. Get it out and run it hard, maybe pull some loads with it. Eventually, you may want to get an aftermarket air box and a freer flowing exhaust.

yeah, I have about three thousand miles on my 05' and it does the same thing. If I baby it and keep around 2000 rpms, when I do get on it, it will role the smoke out. These engines take quite awhile to break in, but once it does it should get better.

I've got 20k on mine.if I tow and work it almost none ever.If I use it for short trips and regular commutes for a week or or so and then give it what I call a DIESEL TUNE UP it rolls it out a tiime or two.My 93 did the same thing but much worse. When we did maintance years back on diesel Nissan Maximas(valve adjust, fuel filter, diesel injection cleaner etc)one of the things the tech did was NAIL IT HARD on the test drive. They ALWAYS baulked and rolled tons of black out then cleared up and ran better, idled smoother etc.Poured some of the injector clean in the new fuel filter and rest in the tank.Fire them up and QUICKLY get them out of the shop and nail them HARD.

Thank you everyone for the information, I quess that I am going to run it a bit harder and let it breath a little. I know that it will not hurt a diesel but you when you have something new you just baby it a liitle bit, I realize that this is not what this beast wants.
