Best oil filter to use......help
Time to use the 'search' feature on this board.... There's literally days of reading on filters and oil on this site.
Some of the top recommendations:
Oil Filter: Fleetguard Stratapore - for your truck the part # is LF16035

Personally I use the Fleetguard Stratapore and Chevron Delo 15W40, and change it every 5K miles or so.

I also run the Fleetguard Stratapore. I think the Mopar filter is the same, just a different color, as is the Fleetguard part (for the F-650).
They are cheaper at the Cummins parts house, or cheaper yet at Gino's. Their 4-2-1 pack is handy and a good deal (one air filter, two fuel, and 4 oil).
I run Premium Blue, but the engine is likely to outlast the truck with any oil that meets the requirements in the manual, IMHO.

You can also run the Fleetguard Stratapore 3894- that's what I use when I run Fleetguards. It is a buck or two cheaper, but the same filter-just without the flutes at the bottom. I don't need those flutes anyways as the filter wrench I have is a spider claw type. I also run the Donaldson ELF 7349. It is a synthetic media filter just like the Stratapore. I only use those as I get them at work for half the price of the Stratapore. Equal the filter, I'm sure.
The LF 3894 can replace the LF16035- I emailed Cummins and here is their reply:

According to our catalog, it states the filters are the same except for the fluted shell.
Thanks for the inquiry.

My question:
Recently I went to my local Cummins shop to buy some filters for my 2006 Dodge Cummins 5.9. Usually they are the LF16035 stratapore, but they did not have any at the time and said that they only had the stratapore LF3894. Is this the same filter, just minus the flutes at the bottom? Am I going to have any issues with these filters?
Also of note:
There is also the Luberfiner Imperial XL LFP 780 (synthetic media) and the Amsoil EAO 80, also synthetic media.
Synthetic media filter better, and are better for longer intervals, and colder temps.
Good luck,
Derek
