Best deal on gear oil for differentials?
Best deal on gear oil for differentials?
Where are you guys getting your synthetic gear oil for the diffs? Time to change mine again and I'm getting tired of paying $80 for 7qts of synthetic gear oil. Can't seem to find it locally by the gallon.
Which grade?
Thanks for the info guys. I was in Checker yesterday and they had Valvoline Synthetic 75w-90 advertised on the shelf for $8.99/qt. Went to check-out and the oil rang up as $11.99/qt. After some wrangling they let me have it for $8.99. Already did the fluid change last night out in the garage.
Also, found out my local Amsoil dealer just switched to Redline. He's about $12/qt too so I may go that route next time.
One more item of interest, as I was logging the differential fluid change in my maintenance manual, a little slip of paper fell out, I believe it was a TSB I printed some time ago. It was labeled "Rev A" and stated that the gear oil should be full synthetic 75w-140 in the rear and dyno 75w-90 in the front. Both the owners and shop manuals say synthetic 75w-90 front and rear.
Oh well, already dun it.

Are you sure this TSB was for a Ram 2500/3500? The Ram 1500's require 75w140 in the rear axle. I haven't heard that our HD trucks use 140 weight.
Look closely at this TSB.........and notice the fluid for 2500/3500 trucks vs. Durangos and Ram 1500s...etc....

SOhappy,
The TSB you're talking about was for the 1500's pickups with 8.5 and 9.5 axles and not the 2500 & 3500 with 10.5 and 11.05 axles. I don't know why you had to pay $12.00 a Qt for Amsoil gear oil being it retails for $12.75 that is unless you did not spend the $10.00 to join and to be able to buy at wholesale prices. FYI I can buy Amsoil from my dealer cheaper then I can buy Royal Purple retail at NAPA.
