This is just my experience over the last few weeks since I bought the truck I have now. It is a 2004 3500 4X4 Quadcab-shortbox with 127 000kms (about 80000miles I guess). All the MPG observations are based on the overhead readings. When I bought the truck, someone had installed a gas muffler and tailpipe(and that took alot of muffler cement to plug the gap around the pipe!) A crazy thing to do, but this is where I began. Driving the truck home, about 100 miles, I was getting 21.6mpg at 70mph. I then bought an Edge EZ chip that was used and installed it at the guys house where I bought it and set it to the third setting which was 60HP and where he found his best milage. As I left his place, I tested my new toy by laying the throttle down a bit, and the truck promptly "ejected" the muffler off the back of the pipe so it could breath! A little louder now, I observed about 26mpg cruising at 60 mph on the way home. When I got home I totally removed the remains of the muffler and tailpipe, so I was basically running a 3.5" straight pipe to the back of the cab. I then added an Airaid CAI and averaged 26.7-27mpg at 60mph. Then I installed the 4" Stainless Turbo back MBRP exhaust and the Airaid modular intake pipe. I can drive in town now without getting a ticket, and cruising the roads at 60mph, the overhead says I am averaging 29.7-30mpg. I am driving empty, and trying for the best milage I can get with my truck, as this thread is asking people to report on. I'm pretty proud of my findings so far, and am looking at the CFM+ intake as my next mod to get me right over the 30mpg mark. Any feedback on that intake would be appreciated! I figure that a $400 mod that gives you 1/2 a mpg better will pay for itself at about 30,000 miles at current fuel prices, which are bound to go up. I plan on putting a couple hundred thousand on my truck, so anything helps!

I guess I am too vague for some of you who might not have read up on WVO (Waste Vegetable Oil).

Topic is what is the best mod to improve mileage? The point here is to improve diesel mileage whether it be #1 or #2. Why do you want to improve diesel mileage? I have a feeling it is because Diesel is expensive.

If you add a secondary fuel system that is designed to burn WVO then you can supplement your diesel fuel and increase your diesel mileage. WVO must be heated, so start your truck on diesel (stock fuel system), once your truck is warm you can run WVO (secondary fuel system), and then shut down on diesel to flush rail and injectors.

It takes about 5 miles for your truck to be warm enough to burn WVO. If you get 15 miles per gallon, then you just burned 1/3 gallon of Diesel. It takes an insignificant amount of diesel to flush the rail and injectors to shut down. If you drive 1000 miles and had to shut down three times, you would get 1000 miles per gallon of diesel fuel.

One could also drive a kabillion miles and get a kabillion miles per gallon of diesel, but my *** gets tired.

So back to the original question, what is the best mod for mileage.

WVO is because it costs me 3 cents a gallon, and allows me to get a kabillion miles per gallon of diesel. How many miles per gallon of diesel (#1 or #2) does your CAI get you? Pretty fun changing my oil more often than filling my Diesel tank.

MoparMan,

You're the first guy that I've seen running WVO on a common rail. Have you had any problems so far? I'm glad that someone is actually doing it, rather than sitting back and saying it will never work!

The best way to increase fuel millage is to drive barefoot and glue a nail to the skinny pedal

Thanks for the kind words, but I wasn't the first. I just took knowledge learned from Shane at RoverHybrids and took it a little further.

I started my endeavor for myself, but have since converted quite a few for others. I personally have over 30K miles on veg with no problems. You just have to feed it good oil.

The key is to over build. My system is made with all high performance parts such as th 23 amp fass 150 pump, aluminum an fittings throughout, timers, pressure and temp switches and fully auto switch over and shut down. I can loan my truck to anyone and they cannot cause any problems.

I love the common rail.

Thats awesome!! What kind of millage with the veggy oil? Any problems with lubricating the pump of injectors?

To the original poster:

Don't forget that the reason you are wanting better mpg is to save money. Why spend a few hundred dollars on tuners/programmers or other mods that would just compromise your warranty. If those mods ever come close to paying off, based on increased mpg over time (several years?), that savings would be quickly erased the first time you needed major warranty work and were denied.

That's my plan. Keep the truck stock and save money by keeping the warranty intact. At the end of the day, that's my money saving plan, in addition to resisting the urge to stab the throttle. It's not for everybody, but just something to consider. If you want to mod it and build power then go for it. Just be realistic about your goals.

i know this maybe a dead dog subject, but the overhead mileage gauge is a real problem. my wife's 300C's meter is dead on compared to hand calc. the 03 and 05 duellies that i have owned were within 1 mpg usually closer to the truth, but my 08 5500 6.7's meter is a minimum 2mpg.

i contacted dodge engineers to as about the problem and the engineer said that they continue to tweak it to make it more accurate and they know it is a problem. on the forums it seems to be the 6.7 gauges that are the most off. it works on the principal of measureing the metered fuel.

dodge knows of no way to calabrate it at the dealers. any input on this

GSW, i think you are right on. the cost of paying for emmision parts out of warrantee is horrendous. any mileage savings (until a magic bullet is created) is mute. there are so many new junk diesel trucks on the road today because of all the chips and half way done mods to the trucks. i would today never consider buying a used diesel truck.

My mileage is virtually the same as if I am running diesel (~18), but since it is so much cheaper I tend to drive harder and at faster speeds on the highway. It is way quieter and smoother compared to diesel. I have had no pump or injector problems, veg oil is an oil so it provides more lubrication than diesel and contains no sulfur. It doesn't smoke as much when I am running a performance tune, but that is an easy fix, just switch back to diesel if you want to "smoke" somebody.

Here are some pictures in no particular order, just some shots as I was doing my install.

I think a better air filter, and an open muffler will help a little. I doubt your going to see 3-4mpg like some may claim but I think you can pick up a solid 1.6-2mpg. I made something similar to PSM's CAI with a 6 1/2" duster hood and a 4" dust hose (cost $29 incl shipping), I did buy a DPP cool hose but all together I spent about $185 including an Amsoil Nano drop in. I am pretty pleased with this setup. I also got a 4" Diamond Eye muffler for $59. Those two mods alone are pretty reasonable and will probably pick up some MPG.

Please see my signature. I drive like a grampa, stay under 1800 rpm most of the time, do not exceed 60 mph very often. This may not be practical for some folks, for me it is since I don't have much interstate driving. No much stop and go either. Mostly country roads.

Also, I run tires at 80 front, 70 rear for less rolling resistance.

Early this morning I fueled up truck on way to body shop to have them replace a fender light and fix a couple small dents and scratches. Filled up first at Flash Foods convenience store because they are cheapest,$4.33 per gallon.

I had run 655.8 miles, took 28.489 gallons up to filler neck- equals 23.019 miles per gallon, which includes 25 miles of pulling gooseneck cattle trailer in hills.

The Opti lube made almost a 1 mpg difference, same with the Rokktech, the spoiler slightly less.

I have heard from many folks about chips and programmers improving mpg, but the cost of $400-$700 is pretty high. $200-300 for intake, more for exhaust. Long time to get ROI- Return on Investment. Plus too much temptation for me to get into it with the extra power.

Just my .02.
