I would search and read before using the K/N filters on the Cummins. I have used them for years in gas engines with good results. I had heard and read to many bad reviews regarding the K/N for the diesels. I do believe they flow better but let to much crude thru for our trucks.

AFE, BHAF or keep using the stock one.

As far CAI kits you want to keep the hot under hood air out from the intake filter, I am replacing my AFE stage 1 with a Volant this week for just that reason. AFE does make a sealed box CAI kit, little pricy theo.

Although not popular with some diesel guys, WVO is by far the best way to get better Diesel MPG. If I short trip my truck, my Diesel mileage is over 50 MPG. If I long trip it I am over 150 MPG. It is merely a fuel additive to extend diesel fuel.

a while back Diesel Power did some testing on CAI's, and the Volant actually caused a drop in HP. you'd get better power (and save a bunch of $$$) dropping a good aftermarket filter in the stock box.
even though my AEM is an open 'filter on a stick' type, the heat shield and battery keep most of the heat away from the filter when the hood is closed.

Perhaps your overhead is accurate but mine always shows 1.5 to 2.3 mpg more than hand recorded milage. Guess I could not keep records by hand and be better satisfied with the overhead figuers, untill I run out of fuel?

Look up tone ring modification. Try googling this item also for more information. If you are mechanically inclined, it should take about 30 minutes to 1 hour to perform. It involves removing the serpentine belt, harmonic balancer (4 bolts) and, removing the tone ring. From the front of the engine, the engine will rotate clockwise and you will need to "waller out" the factory tone ring hole with a dremel tool about 1/8 inch so that you can reinstall and advance the tone ring. This should advance the fuel timing about 2 degrees. I have performed and should get you about 0.5 to 0.7 more mpg. The best part it is free.

If you are not mechanically inclined, then by yourself a programmer. From what I read in forums - Smarty and Smarty Jr. appear to be most popular; however, there are others that perform as well.

Answers like these are not helpful at all and in many cases just add confusion to the topic. Yeah, I get a kabillion mpg's on #2 diesel, I put one drop in per tank. Then I fill up with #1 diesel and I get 18 mpg's on that. Thanks!
