Bad Vibration In The Drivetrain
Bad Vibration In The Drivetrain
Bad vibration only under heavier throttle above 50 mph. Is this going to be u-joints, drive shaft or what? As soon as I let off the go pedal it quits. What should I check or have checked. I trust NO mechanics in this area, does one of you guys personally know of a good one?
you might as well replace the ujoints in the rear drive shaft Since you will have to take it out to do 1 you might as well do both theyre not expensive it is a cheap place to start. Crawl under it and see if you can wiggle the driveshaft it should be sloppy and loose if its the ujoints in my experience its usually the one at the rearend.

If you change your own u joints.....make sure to mark the yokes so you can put them back in the same orintation.....it does make a difference.

tcr if you can listen for the squeeking in the rear when you take off easy it will probably make some noise if its bad. I had about 30k on my 05 when the rear u-joint was bad. It was never sled pulled either. I would check them all and if you take them out find a buddy or someone who will let you use their press to put the caps back in with. It is hard to do with a vise unless its something huge. I broke ours just trying to get my u joint out of the driveshaft.

You can get greaseable u-joints but keep in mind you have to keep them greased of course. Replace them all and after you get it back together it is always a good idea to find someone to re-balance it. If it was my truck, I would pull the front d-shaft and take it for a drive to see if it makes a difference.

, and he assured me these trucks don't have problems w/ u-joints
I have a drone between 95k and 105 k.The truck has been back twice so far next week will be number three. So far they have replaced both rear driveshafts and carrier also retorked the exhaust still drones like crazy .Took it back yesterday and they have ordered 06 motor mounts and a new resonator this stuff goes in next week. While they had the truck they updated the tranni computer settings. When i am in towhaul the tranny goes to 3rd and does not go into od lockup this is a new tsb for the 05 s i believe.I'm going to drive it this way for a bit to see if i like it if not they will change it back to the original settings. Not sure of the benefits though they say you will get better mileage somehow.I'll post when i runn it this way for awhile
Replace your U-joints
I would replace your U-joints. I just had one go out on me this last weekend and I was away from home too. Thank God that I was near a dealership that I liked and trusted. The folks at Dodge Town in Rapid City, South Dakota even returned my truck back to me that same afternoon.
What was weird was the vibration shook the whole truck when slowing down to stop and only after the clutch and brake was depressed. Going down the road the truck ran like a champ. I really did not hear or feel the U-joint go out. Normally when I have joints go, I loose them completely and have thunk, thunk noises when shifting or a variable hum that speeds up or slows down with the speed of the truck, but disengages when stepping on the clutch, but not this time. Although, the day before it did happen I thought I felt my anti-spin differential locking up on a damp road. We had a rain storm go through just an hour before I got off work and the truck was shifting weird form 2nd to 3rd on my way home. Next day going down Interstate 90 neither my wife nor I felt anything out of place until we got to Rapid City, South Dakota and exited off the Interstate and headed into town. As soon as my wife let off of the go pedal while pulling onto the exit ramp the truck made a weird sound like going over bad pavement and then when applying the brakes to stop at a light the whole truck just shuddered. I had her pull the truck over and check truck for any stored codes. At the time I thought I had a bad crankshaft sensor or failed waste-gate on the turbo. No codes were shown.
I never even thought of driveshaft since most of my U joint failures occur at high mileage and I just turned 32,000 on this last trip. At the time I would have swore the problem was in the motor. I felt like a dufus when the Service
Writer told me it was a U-joint after telling him otherwise. They only replaced one. It was the center joint next to the carrier. It looks like I will be checking my U-joints now before every trip and looking at finding a more duriable joint.
Sorry, I did not mean to Hi-jack your post. I just thought I would tell you my recent expierence.
