bad front axle u-joint leads to...

took the truck in for a bad axle u-joint and they're on nat. backorder. So they order me whole axle shaft assemblys. I sit in the waiting room for over 3 hours and then the service writer comes into the waiting room and tells me that while they were trying to remove the hub and bearing assembly with a puller, bearings fell out They were going to have to look into it to see if it was covered, because the DC system was down right now. then asked me if I had someone that could come pick me up, the phone is over there (ok, you break my truck, don't have the parts and I have to find my own way home...)
So I get a call after being home for a few hours and they tell me that due to corrosion from salt water( )they will not cover the bearing assembly, my rotors are pitted about half way through, and I need new brakes, they are about 70% gone. Total for all above repairs, over $1400!!!!

I got 69,889 miles on my brakes to this point, and they are about 70% gone...This means I have about 30,000 miles left on them, but they want me to change them out now while they are in there.

DC says it's between me and them.

I am fuming to say the least

Go down to their shop and look it over with the tech.Pads may only 70% worn and rotors ruined! Seen it many times. But a look and discussion is in order first.

It's Charlotte's only 5 star dealer...
I'm no rotor expert, but the faces are smooth, no grooves. plenty thick too.
What happened is they got in there and saw rust, we lived in Pittsburgh for a full winter and frequently go to the coast. Although the truck has only been actually on the beach once(hard pack sand on the N OBX), and not in any salt water at all. I washed the truck on the way home from the beach.
There really is no rust to speak of in Charlotte. I don't think it looks any worse than trucks that have sat on the lot for a few weeks at OBX Dodge. I'll pull the wheel off tomorrow and take a few pics and post them.

That all sounds a lil bogus to me on that rotor issue and since they lost your bearings why should you have to coughup the cash for that?

Bring your truck up here for a winter, then you will know what rust is all about.

Your truck is max 2 years old, I really cant see the rotors being that bad while still being on the first set of pads.

The tech should also know that if you are going to use a puller to remove the front wheel bearings you should leave the spindle nut intact so the bearings dont split.

What i found worked the best was to remove the bolts from the hub then take a cutting wheel on a hand grind and grind a groove near the hub bolts so you can get a start with the chisel.

The truck was purchased on 11-23-02 and has 69,889 as of them having it in the garage. I have no doubts they were just trying to make some $$$$ before my 7-70 ran out and they would never see me again.

I know on the spindle nut...I tried to get it out of the service mgr what the exact procedure and order they used to get the bearing assy. and shaft separated. not much luck there.

In the morning I'm picking up a few cans of PB Blaster and soaking it down and going to give it a try myself, without a full shop of professional tools and service manuals, If I get it apart, it's official, THEY SUCK! I'm just really disgusted that a bad u-joint can lead to this royal butt raping by a supposed 5 star dealer.

i diagnosed the U-joint a month before them, it took 3 visits for them too see the problem and figure out what it was. and a funny thing, I asked to see or possibly have the bad joints, and they said since they were replacing the entire axle shaft assy. that they weren't going to take it apart, but they do have to send it back to DC Yeah ok.... next week we see axle shafts on Ebay...

Doesn't it sort of look like someone was whacking it with a hammer.

Yeah, they beat the hell out of it with a hammer. then after ruining it, they tried to sell me new ones. I called them on it and they said that they were supposed to be turned before they put them back on So if I understood them correctly, they ruin it and try to sell me new, when I won't buy new, they just turn them? why not just remove them without damaging them to start with, or if they really think they can't be removed without damage, then just turn them?
Then the GM said they don't want to do the warrenty repairs because I wasn't willing to spend money on other stuff and there was no way they could make me happy so just take my business elsewhere.
