Auto Tranny Damage?

While sitting in my truck at the local mall waiting for my wife to return, an older man backed into my truck with enough force to push me about 12-18 forward. My truck was in park only. I heard some loud "clicking" from the tranmission.

My question is how to determine if damage has occured to the transmission. It seems to shift as before and it does go into park and holds. How likely is the possibility of damage? Is there anything I can checked with the pan off?

Thanks!

That was the park pawl clicking against the flywheel; it may be damaged, but most likely it's OK. It won't affect the operation of the trans.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Check extension housing for cracks, and or oil leaks. Does park still hold on slight grade correctlly and feel normal? Does it start in neutral correct and gear positions still O'K.

I don't see any cracks or leaks, and it seems to work as before.

Can the parking pawl slip without breaking the "teeth"? I already had an appointment this week to change the transmission fluid. Can anything be seen from the pan side?

Yes the pawl can slip w/o breaking. No you can't see it with the pan off; you'd have to remove the trans. If it's still working OK I wouldn't worry about it.

Yes, they can jump without hurting things. On the other hand, that much force can also break teeth of the pawl ring, mess up the parking pawl, and crack the pawl mount. The only wya to know for sure is drop the OD section off and check it out.
