Antifreeze question
Antifreeze question
06 megacab. Towing my boat to the ramp the other day and bell went off and check guages light came on. Looked down and the temp was skyrocketing so I shut her down and waited for it to cool off. Resevoir empty and took about 1.5 gallons of water to get the fluid level where it needed to be.
My question is do I have to buy the dodge/mopar high dollar antifreeze or can someone chime in and tell me what brand I need to get, thanks. Truck only has 20k miles on it and was just service/oil lube filter at the dealer

First off I would be concerned about where the 1.5 gal went. No you dont have to buy from the dodge dealer. Your owners manual states which anti-freeze is required. Dont just go out and buy any type it does require a certain type, dont have my manual handy so I cant remember the exact type.

That is the first thing I did was to find out where it went. Nothing visible to the naked eye, it's got me scratching my head though.
Kinda sounds like you blew a freeze plug if that much came out.(Or the radiator or something like that)
The underside of your truck wasnt coated in antifreeze when you pulled over? No puddles under the truck?
Have you checked your oil to make sure the water didnt go there?(headgasket)
As for the coolant, just make sure you get whatever is rated for our trucks.
I had some mopar coolant lying around last time I added some(green stuff)
You can probably use any of the green antifreezes from autozone/oreillys/etc, Prestone, etc

My 2006 mega is in the shop now as we speak. Radiator had a hole in it. Luckily my wife noticed it dripping slowly in the driveway while playing with our kids. Mine was leaking drivers side lower radiator had a hole in it. Check it as the antfreeze had to of gone somewhere.
Just put mine in the shop with 31k miles on it....was way low on coolant and the gauge was bouncing all over the place...the hole was so small there were no visible leaks, no puddles and nothing on the underside of the truck, hopefully ill have it back today
Later Dodges require HOAT. Zerex's web page says Dodge uses their G-05 HOAT died red as factory fill (where the Zerex is kind of a light gold).
2006 trucks seem to have a tendency to develop a leak by a short section of hose on the lower passenger side of the engine, down by the turbo. The clamps seem to get loose

By all means use the HOAT and this can be purchased at NAPA in the Zerex brand. I agree with other posters that the web site says it is died a different color than OEM but it is the same stuff.
thanks
Jamie
Yes, it is the short little hose by the turbo. The two little gear drive type clamps seem to loosen up, I suspect as the hoses start to conform to the shape of the clamps over time and heat cycles.
Mine had a drip every now and then from the bottom of the bellhousing. I couldn't find where it was coming from until I searched terms Coolant, Leak, and Bellhousing... Sure enough, reached up there and it was slightly wet.
A minute to tighten both clamps a bit, and hasn't lost a drop since.
There have been a couple threads about that hose leaking. Here's one that has a couple photos.
