Question Am I bad?

I have a 90 gallon fuel tank in the bed that is not hooked to the fuel gauge. I always fill up both tanks and start my trip with the aux. tank. When she starts to cough when the tank runs dry I switch to the main tank. My question is that bad for the inj. pump ? I have 72000 miles and no problems.

I don't know about the fuel systems on the 05's, but I would never do that with the VP44 on my 01. The pump is cooled by the fuel, and in fact, I never go under 1/4 full.

I would suggest taking your average MPG and multiply that by 90 and then switch over to your main tank when you get within about 10% of running dry in the aux. Do that for a couple fillups and then adjust depending on how many gallons you actually add to the aux tank.

Are you so far from diesel that you need to run the aux tank dry? If not, then why take the chance of causing problems?

No I am not far from diesel, I just don't like to stop that often, I run both tanks to the end then stop. Time is money.

On the other hand if I burn up the pump that is a lotttt of money so I have taken your advice. Thanks

You are asking for trouble if you let the engine cough and sputter from being starved of fuel, BEFORE switching to the other tank. Just not worth the couple extra minutes it may cost you out of your life....

I pump my auxiliary tank into my main tank and use the stock fuel gauge. Works great. I have a switch in the cab to turn the pump on. When the fuel gauge shows full, I turn the pump off. I also have an overflow back to the auxiliary tank so no overfill problems.
