Air filter question..And mileage question..

Well guys I'm thrilled to say I finally got a Dodge. It's an '06 quad cab short bed SLT 4x4 in gray. Anyhow, I wanted to know about the air box. I noticed it's VERY deep. It has a K&N right now that fills in the entire air box. The Fram filter I bought is only 2-3 inches thick, while the air box is about 10 inches deep. Is the airbox aftermarket with the K&N filter, or is it supposed to be that deep? Also, I'm only getting 15-16 MPG with this truck, even on the highway at 70mph. The overhead "lie-o-meter" says I'm getting around 20-22 but I hand-calc'd around 15. Why is this? Is the air filter causing my crummy mileage or is it something else? Also, is there any way to determine what my gearing is in the rear end? somewhere in the VIN? I know it has to be 3.73 or 4.10. Hopefully some of you guys can help me out.

I think you probably have the stock box because they are pretty deep, But I would take that fram back, ditch the K&N and the stock box and just put a BHAF on it. I dont know about the gears, I have heard there is a tag in the glove box on some years but cant remember which ones.

I think there is a tag on the rear diff, you might check. If that does not work, try having the dealer run your VIN number.

You can take your VIN to the dealer parts dept and they can print you a build sheet. It will list all of the equipment on the truck.

I have the auto tranny, 373gear and 285 tires which are about 1" taller than the stock 265's. My RPM's at 65MPH is approx 1700. Don't know if you have the 48e, or tire size, but if yours is an auto with stock tires your rpm's shouldn't be much higher than this if you have 373's.

Welcome to a cummins, you'll love that motor but it will never make the mileage you want. Owned two differnt ones. the first one made 15-15.5 cruising around seventy. 06 is making 16.7 on average. My "lie-o-meter" is the same way. Even if you reset it every tank still comes out about 2 miles to the gallon off.

I bought an 05 low mileage Ram and it had a modified air filter. I think it was an AFE system. It also had a 5 inch Cat Back exhaust. I took the air intake system off and replaced with the OEM box and filter. There was no noticeable difference in the MPG (hand calc). Then I took the 5 inch system off and went back to the OEM 4inch with OEM muffler. Again, no noticeable difference. All of this took place over a 4 month period. I did not want to jeopardize my warranty with Dodge or Cummins so even though It cost me to do it I have been much more satisfied with the truck. The drone and noise from the exhaust while towing became unbearable with the 5 inch system. On closer examination of the muffler I could see that it was actually a "fake muffler" that ran staight thru.....

My mpg is around 17 city and 21 highway while not towing. This is all hand calculated on every single fill up in the past year! The thing I can tell you about mpg is it's all about rpm and speed. I am not a pushy driver. Mostly I keep the rpm's below 1800 while on the highway. These trucks are for torque and towing, it is not a Mustang although it can get up and go if you want. This type driving will cost you in any vehicle. I once topped the tank off and drove 50 mph for 184 miles on open country flat highway. It took 7.9 gallon to top it off again. The math says that is over 23 MPG!!
Leave you truck alone if you value the Cummins Warranty, they call some of these air intake systems "engine killers". The exhaust is not an issue but if you tow be aware of a term called drone. I personally think little is gained from adding hundreds of dollars in mods to the intake and exhaust for the "average guy" on these trucks.

The overhead is always high. Usually 1 1/2 to 2 mpg.

As a side note, shortly after I got my 05, I put a Amsoil dropin filter in it and its done pretty good for me.
