Additives: Makes ya wonder!

I had some Injector clatter for a while now. Nothing I thought was a major problem and LOTS have reported the same here. I found an additive I thought did the best and quieted them down the most. This past weekend I drove a 700 mile round trip in the truck and did NOT use any additive what so ever. Just Fresh #2. My clatter went completely away. Next weekend I am going to tow the trailer which usually makes the clatter louder but going to see if she stays quiet. Wonder if we really do need an additive afterall?

My truck started puffing a little white smoke at startup. Not bad, but it never did it before. I had the flash done, and the dealer said it was running fine, passed the injector test. I tried Power Service, Lucas, and adding nothing - still white smoke. After reading several threads on the plus and minus of 2 Stroke oil, I decided to give it a try. I immediately noticed it was running smoother and a little quieter. I thought on my cold starts it did not seem to be smoking as much, and sure enough, by the second tank the smoke is gone. I am running a very lean mixture, only about 10 to 12 ozs per tank.

Seems to be a great varation between advertised accomplisments and fact on vehicles. I wonder why advertising is such big business if the product really did it's job. My take is: there are a lot of snake oils out there that offer little or no improvements. Occasionally something shows a benefit that is somewhat unexpected. In general the needed additives are already in base products. Example: Why do we put material in fuel to lower the point at which it can be pumped (cloud point) when the fuel company has to make sure thay can pump it into your tank at the filling station. Fuel tanker drivers have repeatelly told of additives being added to make sure they can get fuel off tanker and into your tank. JMHO and tired of making snake oil companys richer and me poorer.

Very true! And I cannot believe the VARIANCE in INDIVIDUAL TRUCKS! Two identical trucks with identical engines can have different reactions to the exact same additive etc. Some trucks like additives and others seem to not like them much at all! LOL I have considered the 2 stroke oil but don't want to use it unless all else fails. It probably works fine but I would rather use an additive made for diesels.

I used PS/MMO mix in every tank from 6k to 90k on my truck. I don't know if it did any good, but it didn't do any harm. Just had Flux 2s installed and because of IKE I did not have any PS and have not used any additives in the first two tanks.

I am torn between adding a little extra lub and cleaning to just forgetting about it. I may still add the PS/MMO combo if for nothing else the Cetane Boost factor.

This is the same mix I use, about 50/50 in every tank. Truck is definitly a little quiter with it. I have tried the Wally world two stroke also and seemed about the same. Due to cost i might switch to two stroke, we'll see.

I just use strictly PS grey bottle, have been for a couple of yrs and when the ULSD formula came out went with that. Don't notice no difference but I know how dry of sulfur the diesel is, so its got to work a little, and if it does, that's good money spent.

Have you guys read the list of chemicals on the bottle of stuff you're pouring into your tanks? Most of them contain the same crap that paint thinner is made from,no thanks! I'll run a weak tankful every few months to clean things up alittle but thats it.

I was hesitant to try it, but I figured it will not hurt anything. 2 Stroke Oil is made to burn, it doesn't care if it is mixed with gas or diesel. I have been using Power Service in almost every tank, makes me wonder if it actually did anything for lubrication.

great point. most diesel additives (like PS and Stanadyne) are made mostly of stuff like acetone, petroleum naptha, and other heavy duty solvents. lots of diesel mechanics believe in the long term, they strip the lubricating film from metal parts in your fuel system.
Howes Diesel Treat and Lucas Upper Cylinder Lube seem to be made with little or no solvents, and are made to increase lubricity- you can smell the difference between these additives and the PS type additives, which smell like paint thinner.

I only use Lucas once every few months being I don't drive it much, other then that I just use a premium grade diesel fuel.

I use the PS and 2- stroke, I do notice that with the PS The truck does not seem to have as much black smoke. I do not see any performance changes.

I think I am going with DBLR on this one. If no additives continue to make my clatter stay away then I am going to leave it well alone and run the Lucas ever so often to clean everything up. I had been using Howes meaner cleaner with good results as well.

Since someone stole the whole exhaust off my truck and all I could afford was straight pipe to replace it, I am planning on finally adding some additives to my fuel now in the 6.7. It is a good idea in the winter to keep the fuel from gelling. As far as the lubricating qualities are concerned, I don't mind spending the $$$ on something that is really gonna do the job and make my fuel system parts last longer. I just got jug of PS(white) and some MMO but I have not mixed them yet after doing a search on additives and found your last topic Roperteacher. Apparently this stuff is not that great even though many, including me, have used it for years.
I don't care if I get better mileage or if the truck runs quieter. I just want something to lube the fuel system. Maybe I should just pour a jug of Slick50 into the tank...
I may have to try some of the products mentioned in this topic..
