AAM1150 Limited Slip
Hoping for a factory locker...
Since AAM provides the GM products with a factory rear locking diff, I'm holding out hope for a locker in 2005, when I'll likely be buying my CTD 3500...
In various soft dirt road/ very mild offroad adventures in my 2WD Dakota and trailer, I've found that the Trak-Lok LS on the old 9.25 is fairly ineffective in the soft stuff I've run into. A locker in a friend's GMC 2WD was much less prone to digging in, since it kept the wheelspin from getting out of hand in that crucial split-second. Does anybody know from experience if the unit AAM is currently installing is any better than the old cone or clutch-style LS designs in soft dirt?
I go to some fairly out-of-the-way spots to find dark night skies where I play with my big telescopes. I'd prefer to preseve the highway handling, mileage, and simplicity benefits of a 2WD and won't get a 4x4 if I can get a 2WD with a locker or a more effective LS in back. I'm not rock crawling or serious offroading and have found that a little sense and a smart throttle foot and gear selection usually keep me moving in the off-pavement journeys I take.
So, input on the current AAM LS and how it performs on soft dirt?

The limited slip in my truck is so ineffective that I asked the dealer to verify that it really was installed when I took it back for my first oil change.
I've had 2wd open differentials that weren't as helpless as this truck.

I emailed the maker of the limited slip. No electric locker for ours yet but plans are in the works for 05.
OH, and my LS seems to be working just fine at getting me sideways on the snow/ice. I need better tires!

They have replaced mine twice! On certain road conditions, like wet or snowy it will go side-ways, BUT! in the grass or part way in a ditch or off camber it WONT WORK! These thing are JUNK! when it comes down to it.
