Think about it for a minute....where would you put the gear, the shift rail, the shifter position?

Doesn't appear to be to many G56 experts here. I am asking for technical reasons as to why a 7th gear couldn't be added??

thats not worth it to me when you have to service it every 10k miles i would have to change the oil in it more than in the engine

I am not talking about the GV or anything of that sort. I am curious as to why a 7th gear could not be added into the G56 transmission? There is room on the stick shift in the current shifting pattern such as top right that would not interfer with interior features of the truck. If it is a matter of room in the G56 casing.....why not make a replacement set of gears taht are minimally thinner to allow the addition of another gear?? Expert opinions??

It would have to be a totally redesigned unit. The main shaft and counter shafts are setup clearance wise with no extra space. Only has room for the existing bearings, gears, syncros, snap rings if any, shift forks, case, etc. Making smaller gears would decrease reliablitly big time.

The obvious need comes in the ability to maintain all original features for gear ratios but add the ability of a 7th gear for mpg when at speed. Was just looking for a clear answer as to why it won't work.

that would be sweet, you know how meny times i try to throw her in "5th" in used to driving my 5 speed where the last gear is high and to the right. im all the time pulling it out of 6th and going for where 5th is on a 5 speed.

not to metion if there was a 7th gear for running empty, that would drop the revs down around 15 or 1600, think of the gas millage

The clear answer is that there is no room for extra parts, nor is there the availability of these parts....thats it in a nutshell! For your application, an aftermarket under/overdrive splitter would be your only choice. What rear end ratio are you running?

I am not convinced that you would see better mileage if this was possible...at some point the engine will 'lug' and will become less efficient. Im not sure what the exact rpm would be, but im not sure you could maintain effeciency at 15-1600 rpm. Flat would likely be ok, but small hills and wind would affect this.

I could see adding a gear down low to help when pulling, other than that it's useless. Besides, isn't 6th gear like only a tenth of a point lower ratio than 5th on a 5spd? Didn't they just add the extra gear between 2nd and 3rd on the 5spd. to make a 6spd?
