1st - 6.29
2nd - 3.48
3rd - 2.10
4th - 1.38
5th - 1.00
6th - 0.79
Rev - 6.29

These are the ratios, so 6th is already at an overdrive ratio, still confused about adding a 7th 'overdrive' gear. Having another gear was always a 'want' when I had a 5 speed, but havent had a complaint with the 6 speed.

With the G56 you can only get 3.73s, suposedley.

A 7th would be great for me, even with 34" tires I am turnin 24-2500 rpms on the interstate. 15-1600 rpms would be a little on the low side to me but if you could turn about 2k at 80 that would just about have to increase fuel mileage. Not to mention you could do more than 105 mph top speed, if you where at the track that is.

I am pretty sure the NV5600s had a .73:1 over drive which isnt real signifigant but every little bit helps.

In my opinion the 6th is to low... The 5th in my 97 was nice but even then at 70-75 a few 100 less RPM would have been nice.

I went GV Overdrive. Now 2K = 80 MPH 6th seems like a joke on the highway after driving with 6th "over" for months now.

Smarty and an OD unit made it a real highway truck. 5th Over is like 6th but direct drive so towing is better too.

Still not crazy about the smaller output shaft and U-Joint. But I doubt I will break it since I do not tow real heavy stuff. Plus if they run em on the drag strip with mega power Gassers it probably fine for my usage.

There is no way to add another gear to the transmission housing. If you want a 7th gear, you have to use a different transmission housing, or add an overdrive unit to the output shaft side of the transmission.

I would like to see a two speed rear axle incorporated into our trucks. Then you would double your gear selection. Too bad nobody makes them for our trucks.

lets say there was room for more parts in the case or reconstruct the guts to a little higher final drive ratio would this be more or less money than changing your axle ratios

oh thats right we have no options 3.73 or 4.10 man I would love some 3.55s and I am runnin 35s

There are aftermarket pinion/gears sets for our trucks, dont quote me on this, but if I recall, they go from 3.11 to 5.24. You would of course have to do both front and rear, but if you want it bad enough, the options are out there! I found this on a rock crawling site, and will try find a link.

"Well, why don't you just change your gear ratios so that your 6th is faster, and not have a 7th?"

I'm interested in your findings!!!! I would uch rather change out the rear end gear and front diff gears than messing with the transmission-------- but by then you could have just went ahead and got the Gear Vendors O/D unit and had been happy!!

Ok, from what I can see, they only have higher ratios...up to 5.54 or so, but nothing lower than 3.73. They do list a 3.07 but not for 3rd gen trucks.
