70 degrees. what gives??

70 degrees. what gives??

If the outside air temp is above 70 degrees my engine sounds sweet. but if the outside temp falls below that, it sounds really bad even after reaching full operational temperature. lots of clattering and pinging. Is there some doodad that turns on or off at that particular outside air temp???

I have not experienced this issue with my 03. Has anyone else? I did notice this on my previous Gen II 01.5 CTD except it was at a lower temperature. At 50 degrees or lower the engine made all kinds of sweet sounding diesel noises. The neighbors were always commenting on it sounding like a fire truck coming up the street.

My truck sounds diferent every time I fire it up. I think it idles louder when it is warm out. The last week has been around 45deg for highs in the day. When I go out and start the truck after work it almost sounds quieter than it did all summer. I do however notice that below 35 deg or so it has all its hickup problems and weird isues that I dont notice when its warmer out.

last night i started up at about 5 degrees celsius and the truck sounded loud
but they often do when its that cold.....but the funny thing about last night was that after about only 2 minutes of warm up and mabe another 2 of driving it was like somebody threw the quiet switch. it was amazing, no knocking or pinging
it was the best my truck has ever sounded......nice and smooth could hardly tell
it was a diesel.... so who knows if it will last.

If i remember correctly the pilot injection is turned off during warmup and below a certain rpm. Mine has always sounded like my 2nd gen during warmup. On the 555's it's normal. I don't know about the 600's...

Try getting your fuel form somewhere else and see if that makes a difference. You can also add a cetane boost or fuel additive that will help with the lubrication and this too will quiete it down somewhat
