Self Service ?
I would like to start servicing my Cummins myself since the dealer in my area is on crack. I have a few questions of course.
1. Are the Fleetgaurd filters the same/better than Mopar ?
2. What is a good choice of oil/grade that meets DC 's warranty ?
3. Are the Mag-Hytec pans worth the bucks ?
4. Diff oil - What brand/weight/additive, oil that meets or exceedds Mopar ?
5. Does someone have all the quantities and grades for all oils and fluids ?
6. Any warranty issues known when self servicing with non Mopar fluids etc ?
7. Anything else i should know ?
Sorry for all the questions, maybe one should invest in a Dodge service manual, but i just want to get started. Thanks

1. Mopar filters are the same - just cost more so the dealer can make a buck off them.
2. You will want an oil that is CI-4 rated. This is a rating by API not DC. Most premium oils these days carry this rating - Chevron Delo, Valvoline Premium Blue, Shell Rotella, Mobile Delvac 1300. Good choices for full syn are: Mobile Delvac 1, or Amsoil
3. I have no personal experience with the Mag pans but they are expensive & require more oil. I have heard that they are good though.
4. & 5. Check your owners manual. This info is in there along with the service schedules.
6. If you keep a detailed log, all receipts and maybe even take a digital pic (with date) when you are doing the service - I dont see how they could deny warranty.

Thanks Dr. Evil. I talked to David on the phone, very helpful. They stock all the filters at a very good price. Oil 10.65 reg/16.12 prem, fuel 16.47, air 18.37. All cummins filters to boot. What is the take on synthetic engine oil ? Worth it or not ? Is there a good brand of oil that will cover all fluids in the Cummins ? I heard Amsoil is not always covered under warranty, is this true ? Thanks for all the help.

Get that membership - it will pay for itself in the long run.
syn - some will disagree - but we live in a cold climate and I think synthetic is well worth it - 15W40 dino doesnt pump very well at -40.
I generally use Delo synthetic (easily available from U.F.A. farm stores and fuel stations) - $16.00 a gallon. For comparison, the dino Delo is $11. You'll need 3 gallons. Also, you can buy your oil right at Cummins.
Youll probably have to use a mixture of different fluids (unless you want to go with Amsoil). Not sure if Amsoil is covered or not - I used to run it in my Cherokee but its just too expensive for this truck - and I dont believe in the extended drain intervals that Amsoil does.

Sorry, mines a stick so I dunno about ATF......as for the diff - use synthetic......Shell Spirax. Or make a trip to Mopac Racing on 170 street. They carry racing fluids like Royal Purple and Redline - not sure if they comply with DC warranty though - you'll have to check out the specs and make sure your dealer agrees.

Yes AMSOIL is expensive but they do make ATF that meets ATF+4. DON"T use ATF+3 and then add a modifier. The stuff will kill your tranny, power steering and transfer case. ATF+4 is a synthetic fluid and ATF+3 is NOT, even if you add a modifier itis still NOT a full synthetic.
As far as warranty as long as you can prove you have done all the maintenance with approved fluids, API certs and the such, then you are G to G.
As others have said use the synthetic, yes it cost more but will pay for itself during the winter and the heat of summer. The stuff flows much better when it's cold than any normal oil, thus your engine wil have lubrication sooner and start much easier.

Schaeffers oil Check out the specs on there oil. I like what I saw & bought a few cases from marksmith@mchsi.com He's a sales rep & I got a great price through him. Check out the specs at www.schaefferoil.com

Doesnt look like Amsoil is even API certified. Therefore, if you are worried about warranty. you should probably stick with the mopar stuff, especially in the diiffs as Ive hard of a few failures with the AAM axles. You might find this thread interestiing:
