Set timing to 16 degrees?

I have seen several topics discuss setting the timing to 15 or 16 deg to get better fuel mileage and more power. If this is so why doesn't it come closer to the 16 degrees from the factor? How much power & fuel mileage can you expect?

Re:Set timing to 16 degrees?

If you have the head gasket to handle it 18 is better, if you have allot of fuel 20 is the best overall.......and I have proved it on the dyno......FYI.

I thought the further you up the timming the worse it runs on the bottom? is that true or can you have a daily driver/5er puller set at 20?

Re:Set timing to 16 degrees?

The bottom end does go away with timing....true. Talking with Piers he set's his at 18 if he is going to tow but normally runs around 20, towing at 20 or more creates too much cyl pressure and 18 would only work with a good gasket I just don't tow.

Re:Set timing to 16 degrees?

That's what I run, an O-ringed head with a .020 Marine gasket, there good to 70-75 psi after that you need to get some crazy C-ring stuff like Battering Ram did.

Don't know much about the C-rings and don't really want to as I have no need.

That is the page that Battering_Baldness talks about his new setup. It's a nice looking deal. He talks about it, ask him a question, I'm sure he will answer.

Re:Set timing to 16 degrees?

I am running 19* on the street as a daily driver and am having no problems, from the timing. Now the fueling is another matter, but that is about to be fixed. PDR head, cam and twins, should do it.
