6 speed lubricant

Stopped by the dealer today to buy gear oil for the 6 speed. Does anyone have a source other than the dealer? They want $13.56 per QUART!!! The local auto parts dealers dont know what to put in there. I bought a filter kit from Geno's and want to install it, but not if I have to buy $68 worth of gear oil. Thanks guys

Pennzoil Synchromesh oil at Autozone for around 5 bucks a quart. It has the DC spec right on the bottle.

I used Pennzoil Synchromesh at the last fluid change but next time I'm going to try Redline MTL.

Does the PTO cover use a sealant or gasket? If sealant, anyone know what type of sealant?

Casey,
I used an automotive RTV sealant type 270. It's black and good to 535 degrees.

I used the Sychromesh.

No need to take the PTO cover off. Just remove the bottom bolt, and let it drain. Fill it through the plug just to the rear of the PTO cover.

I used the penzoil at 22k and I would suggest taking off the pto cover to clean out the bottom of the trans where the magnet is. I took out a full tablespoon of metal and after 18k since the trans is shifting worse again. I just ordered redline mtl to see if it will improve shifting and cut down on the wear.

I can't go out and look right now because of the slush all over the ground, but can you fill the 6 speed from the plug on the D/S of the tranny...I think it's a 30mm hex plug?

Nope, it's a 17mm hex head plug. YOu need the 17mm wrench from Sears for $9 or just take a couple of nuts and weld them to a bolt with 17mm head and use that tool. Just make sure you can get the fill plug out before you drain the transmission!

I just went to the local Summit Racing store and got the Redline MTL. I havn't put it in yet, but I dicided to go with the good stuff because it's not like an automatic where you change the fluid more often. BTW it was $7 a quart.

Nobody know if you can fill it from the D/S plug like I originally asked a few posts up?
