I'm not an expert, but have you changed the fluid in it yet? Mine has always shifted better after an oil change.

1st and reverse are not synchronized. So engine rpm has to match wheel speed or it will be hard to get in.

Sorry, stupid answer. I misread your question. My old 6spd was rough in 1st and reverse in very cold weather.. Changing the fluid always made it smoother. I would change fluid about every 20K to 25K miles.

Assuming you have an NV5600, all gears have syncros including 1st and reverse. I don't know about the G.

Mine also started getting difficult to shift into 1st or reverse when stopped after idling in neutral, and it's also getting "bumpy" to shift into 3rd.

I am running synthetic, and have just over 30k of sane, adult driving.

I think some of these NV's just don't shift very well. I think mine will have to get worse before Dodge would likely warranty it.

Sometimes my truck gets difficult to get into gear. So I pump the clutch pedal quickly 10 times seems to help.
For reverse I always shift into 5th gear before going into reverse. Much easier to get into reverse that way.

Sounds like clutch not fully releasing.

With mine, anyway, the clutch does not seem to be dragging. It's like if the syncros come to rest in the wrong position relative to each other, it doesn't want to go into gear.

reverse is sometimes hard for me, i have to let the clutch out just a tad and it'll slip right in. do these have clutch brakes on them like big trucks? i know ours wore out once, and we had to replace it.

Yeah, I will tyipically throw it into any forward gear, roll a few inches forward, and then immediately throw it into Reverse, goes right in with that method. Mine has 120K+ miles and shifts like a hot knife through butter with all of the otehr gears. Little notchy when cold, like coming out of the neighborhood in the morning, but other then that, shifts great, except I just had knee surgery, and I am going over to an auto, whcih of course is another story....

Oils that come to mind is Pennzoil Synchromesh Fluid and the factory stuff. For synthetics Amsoil MTF and Redline MTL.

I've run into this with the 4spd that was in the older Chevys, if it doesn't want to go into reverse put it in 1st, if it doesn't want to go into 1st for this maneuver put in 2nd then 1st and it should slip into reverse. Seems like if you can't get in 1st just move it into 2nd and it feels like the gears moved over to line up for 1st.
