Just a guess on my part, but, the aison will have a better chance of surviving the abuse from being put into a higher gvw truck. And with the 4500/5500 trucks that are hopefully coming soon it is a better match for the job. Aison has a great reputation for having a very stout/reliable trannsmission that can handle pretty much anything you can give it. So not only is it a great match for new chassis cabs it will definitly help market the new heavy line of trucks as well. If your planning on working a truck hard you cant ignore the package that dodge is giving. 6.7 cummins, aison auto, freightliner/sterling frame, ect...
As far as why wouldnt they just put the aison in all the trucks. My only guess is that, for now , aison would not be able to satisfy the demand for that many trannsmissions and parts.

Dont know much about how the electronics in trannys work but would there be a way to swap out the 48RE with the new 6sp auto? I should be a direct bolt up with only having to modify your drive shaft, but would there be a problem with the electronics side of the house?

Now that would be nice wouldn't it? 5.9 Cummins without the emissions BS and a nice (hopefully) stout smooth 6-speed Auto to put the power down. SOMEDBODY needs to do the swap and report back. I know I would if I had the finances.

Even though most people don't work their trucks hard, dodge still has to design their own 68RFE to handle the people who will. They have to design it for the toughest environment the 2500 and 3500 trucks can handle. The last thing they need is a bunch of trucks destroying the new 6 speed autos because thye are maxing out the trucks capabilities. So i don't buy that it will be a weak transmission just becasue it's not as strong as the Aisin tranny.

My nephew is a tech at the local Dodge dealer, & I was asking him if he had any info on the new 6 spd auto's for the 2500,3500's & he said that they haven't passed any of the tests that they have been put through. This is just what he has heard from the tech meetings that he has to attend on new & upcoming models. I hope that the trannies hold up well or Dodge will continue to be known for weak trannies like furd is for the POS PSD.

There have not even been any training courses on the new HDRFE 6-speed trans yet. As far as not passing any tests, that doesn't make sense. Dodge has been testing this trans for quite some time now, and I am sure they have got the bugs worked out of it. They've got too much riding on this to screw it up.

Transmission Issue

It appears I may be the first person to find out how good or bad this new 6 sp auto transmission is. Mine is in the shop as I write this with an interesting problem. When it shifts from 2nd into 3rd it never really engages into 3rd. This has happened three times in the first 5000 miles, but when it does I loose all drive capabilities and the engine runs up the revs due to no load.

I've found no reference to this on line and my dealer tells me they have no technical information regarding this symptom. I'm curious to hear back from them and see how capable they are to deal with this new technology.

More to the forum if and when I get a resolution. If anyone has insight into a possible or probable cause I would really appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks - one frustrated Dodge owner

You dug up a thread from 12/06 to post this info about your broken tranny??? It's not even the right board.

Just a Fluke?

Yes I should move my post to a different thread or start a new one, I got here based on a google search for tanrsmission issues. Just a fluke eh? You sound just like my service advisor ! It seems I got one of the problematic trucks as it tossed the second check engine light, and I already had the new download that was supposed to address that issue. I would love to spend more valuable time documenting my tale of woe but my spare time will be spent arguing with my dealer. Once I have all this managed properly, and hopefully fixed, I'll relocate my posts in a better thread.
