DEAD!!.. on the side of the road

Welp, got left stranded in rural ID last night. Initially I was in Eagle, ID when it just died. Got it restarted and limped it to my inlaws. It was surging and sputtering. So I changed the fuel filter. It threw a 628 code which is low voltage fuel pump or something like that. got it primed fired and died. hit again fired up and ran fine. drove it about 5 miles everything seemed fine. so I headed to Cascade, up a passs, got about 30 miles from Eagle. started doing it again, pulled over, pulled the fuel filter, re primed it started nothing and mean nothing.

time for a tow, and i won't even get into what i had to do to get Daimler Crappy lady to get me a tow truck up there. it was ridiculous, she was a complete IDIOT!!!

Dealerdip called and said won't be able to look at until late today or Monday.

I assume it is the fuel pump????? Anybody got anything else????

I would not let the dealer touch that truck. Since it is an 03 they are going to change it to the tank style lift pump. Not good in my opinion. The glacier diesel pump will work really well with the 03.

Yeah, but..... still is an issue with not pumping fuel after a 1/4 tank. I think I will have the warrenty cover this one, when it goes maybe they will have the aftermarket ones fixed.

I just read for an hour, definitely seems to be the lift pump. wait and see what dealerdorks say.

I may have jumped the gun alittle Looking at your sig. I see no performance mods on the truck and if this is true the intank style will work very well for you. It is not often you see a stock truck. The intank will be fine

This is only true with the trucks that HAVE the in tank pump. Your 03 has the pump on the filter. They are going to put the in tank pump in your truck so when this one dies YOU WILL have the problem with the 1/4 tank of fuel. If you keep the sending unit from your 03 and place an after market pump in you WILL NOT have the 1/4 tank of fuel problem.( all of this is based on you going to an aftermarket fuel pump later on.)

ps. I do not want to come off as "I am right and you are wrong" I am just want to share some info.

You'll be money ahead, and probably on the road quicker with a GDP system. That's my plan! --- Calling Lary to order one thru DTR right now!

Call them and tell them to stop if you ever plan on performance upgrades for your truck. If you switch over to a walbro unit, you'll be using the stock pick up and you wont have problems. I can run my truck right down to E, just like normal, no issues whatsoever.

I have the retrofit kit on my 2003 and it seems to suck fuel until the tank is damned near dry, well past 1/4 tank.

thats what this site was intended for I don't think that all. I know very little compared to most, just what I read. I am torn on what to do. they are going to look at and see what is wrong and then call me.

I really don't intend to do much for mods, I got enuff hobbies to spend money on.

Thats the main reason to change over to an aftermarket pump. The 03 sending unit is far better than then in tank pump sending unit.

You will be alright with the retro kit from the dealer. I thought the same thing no mods...that lasted I think 4 months I am waiting for my lift pump to die and I too am looking at all the options. The only issue is $$$$$$$

Okay, just thought of something else... Better filtration, I know it has nothing to do with the lift pump but it is a good idea, and of course Glacier diesel has a 2 micron that is really good. (from what I have read)

sorry for the double post, but I have no idea how to quote two people at the same time.

Had the same thing happen with my 04 SO truck. The dealer replaced it with a retro in tank pump and it was covered by emissions warranty.

You lost me here, the in-tank setup is better. Period. I suppose if you want to be able to change pumps all the time then by all means get an external one.

What he is trying to say is that the sending unit for the fuel gauge is better with the pump mounted fuel pumps. I had my truck retrofitted with the in tank pump and now my fuel gauge never reaches empty. I actually ran my truck out of fuel right after they changed my pumps, causing me to be stranded yet again. Needless to say I wasn't happy, and if I had to do it all over again I'd forget about the warranty, and just install an after market pump.
