5.9 motor blowby..:(

Morning guys, I have been having some concerns about the health and reliability of my 5.9. Truck is an 05 and has 230k and has been a fantastic truck but i was a youngster when i bought her so i def drove her pretty hard and it shows. I am worried because recently the truck was in the shop and i asked to have the mechanic look over the motor as I lose about 3-4qts of oil between changes at 7500miles through the breather tube. Through the "oil cap" compression test i get haze but no pressure (cap doesnt hardly move at all). I plan to rebuild the motor around christmas. Testing that was done showed injectors and fuel system healthy but motor had blow by for sure. My question based upon oil consumption how bad is the motor? Truck has no apparent power loss, idles fine starts fine no smoke or issues.

Thanks guys

if you are using that much oil between oil changes,i would think you have a intake air cleaner problem. my engine does not use a drop between changes (10,000 miles) i am pushing 300000 miles..........i live in the desert where there's a lot of dust

No blue smoke whatsoever. Hazes a bit out of the oil fill cap and a haze from exhaust pipe with a lil bit more haze from the breather tube. The turbo is definitley shot based upon play in the turbo. But no oil in the intake tubing at all.

Check out my situation. I had a cracked piston ring in cylinder #6. I dont attribute it to poor air filtration. From my research its from the ring gap being set tight from the factory coupled with me modifying the fueling, heated it up to the point that the ring's ends touch and have no where to go, and then gal the sides of the walls... pretty common failure in our trucks.

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...-309367/page2/

wound up rebuilding the whole engine - and setting the gap bigger to reduce the occurrence in the future... time will tell. but to date, I have close to 14k miles on the rebuild and its been running great. I have a faint touch of blow by and consume about 2qts of oil every 2k miles - but I am told that is to be expected.

Well I have to ask what shitty filter did you use? A k&n type air filter?
