Hello all,
I'm a new member of Diesel Truck Resource and I wanted to get some feedback on the Dodge 6.7 Liter Diesel Engine.

Do all 6.7's produced since 2007 have problems with clogging particle filters? I'm planning on buying a new truck, but I've read some articles that state
the 6.7's have nothing but problems. Anyone with ideas or suggestions on what I should, or should not buy, 5.9 Liter or 6.7 Liter?

If you can find a good low mileage 5.9L I would jump all over it. The 6.7's have had issues but I think a lot of it was owner error. Like all new engines, you are going to have a few that are just problematic. If you are reading on the internet about all the problems it probably sounds like a lot but think of it this way. How many people jump on the internet to report "My truck is perfect and I have had zero problems!!" Not very many. The people posting problems is A LOT less than the people that have zero problems.
Honestly either 5.9 or 6.7 will be just fine. It all depends on what you want to do.

The 5.9 is legendary but a friend of mine who is a field mechanic said they had more problems with the 6.7's than they knew what to do with at his company. They opted to delete all EGR and exhaust filters and he said those motors are night and day different now. He owns a 5.9 and said he'd jump all over a deleted 6.7 anyday!!!!!!!!!

 

I HAD a 2000 with the 5.9 and due to a leaking 53 block, moved up to the 6.7. For the first 4 months I had the truck, things were good, then winter hit and the truck could not get the exhaust warm enough for the regens in town.

Since the emissions systems "failed" due to our rough roads, my 6.7 has been an awesome truck. No CEL's for almost a year, unlimited amount of idling without issue and the 6 speed auto with engine brake. Never will I go back to the 4 speed for towing!!! The 5.9 is an AWESOME motor, but the 6.7 is, I believe, the way to go. The down low grunt along with the VGT cannot be beat, and if I keep my foot out of it, will give decent fuel economy as well.

 

I bought the 5.9 instead of the 6.7 because when I bought there had only been 2 years of 6.7's and I did not want all the EPA stuff with its problems.

However, I really wanted the 68RE tranny that came with the 6.7 along with the exhaust brake. Hard Decission.

I put 2 grand in the tranny (48RE) and changed the rear so it would tow my fiver without me always worrying about the transmission. I had been driving a 2000 Cummins with a NV5600. It was really hard even considering the automatic.

Glad I did it. ??The turck gets 19 on the hwy and 11 towing the fiver with the jucie on the tow position. I've heard some 6.7's get good mileage and I've also heard some don't.

I've put 11,000 miles on the tranny towing since I beefed it up with no problems so far.

I heard the same thing. I bought mine about 4 months ago, and love it. 2010 6.7. Deleted.
It gets better mileage than my 07 5.9 did, and has more torque. Plus the truck is REALLY nice.

I agree, so many non truck drivers will buy the biggest and baddest truck money can buy just to go back and forth to buy milk. Later when they have problems, because they never open up the throttle, they complain about it.

i bought a 05 model with 41K miles. It runs great and gets unreal mpg on the highway, but i worry some about it as i am a very conservative driver,

I may need to get on it some.

But the 5.9 seems great to me, after owning a 2500 gm.

 

I bought an '08 to get the 6sp auto. From what I've read, the '07.5 6.7's had some issues. My deleted '08 has been problem free, gets the same mileage as a 5.9, makes more power, runs quieter, no contest, 6.7 wins!

 

^^^ Actually ALL the 6.7's are the exact same engine, transmission and ECM. The only differences are the computer programming. Were there issues initially? Yes, but the programming has taken care of allot of problems. I had the latest updates at the time, but still had issues as most of my work is done in town. If you can find a early model 6.7 where the person/dealer is under the impression the first 6.7's were an issue, you should grab it, get the updates done and have a great truck. Or go 1 strep further, delete it and have an excellent truck.
