New Purchase ~ 5.9 Liter or 6.7 Liter???

Hello all,
I'm a new member of Diesel Truck Resource and wanted to get some feedback on the Dodge 6.7 Liter Diesel Engine.

Do all 6.7's have problems with clogging particle filters. I'm planning on buying a new truck, but I've read some articles the 6.7 have nothing but problems.

Any suggestions on what I should, or should not buy.

Thanks!
Shandon

I have one of each. The 6.7 is reliable if you have the most recent updates to the ECM from the dealer. If you are open to suggestion, the aftermarket can take care of that nasty filter. Mine is still very clean..

The difference of the trucks from the 5.9 to the 6.7 is all drivetrain as the 6.7 comes with a 6spd auto and the 5.9 comes with the 4 spd auto. Both can be had with 6 spd manual. This may or may not be an issue for you.

the 5.9 is a simpler configuration-with no emissions controls / filtration done at the factory level. Lots of people remove the particulate filters, but that will void any type of warranty-if you care.

The 48re tranny ( 4speed auto ) is a strong transmission at stock levels, but I just hate mine. the gear ratios are terrible and I find that the thing is always spinning too fast.
Get the 5.9 with the 6speed manual. Or get the 6.7l with the 6 speed auto....

got a little off topic-sorry

Thank you for your response Lil Dog.
If I am understanding you correctly, as long as all the current emission updates have been completed at the dealer, on the 6.7 engine (Should) have the same (Reliability) as what we've seen in the 5.9. Do just the updates alone take care of the problems, or would one would need to take advantage of the aftermarket upgrades to get rid of any repeat emission issues they seem to have?

I know it is a little difficult to tell at this stage of the game since the 6.7 has only been on the market since 2007. I'm just extremely hesitant of buying the 6.7, with all the emission control added. If it were you, and you were going to buy another truck, what configuration would you prefer with all your experience to date? Sorry for the long message, but your opinion is extremely valuable to me, especially since you own both!

Take care,
Shandon

Thanks IPDiesel,
If I end up with the 6.7, I will most likely get it with the Automatic Transmission, and hope it doesn't nickel and dime me on my way journey to travel One Million Miles!

Have a great week,
Shandon

I bought the 6.7 for 2 main reasons.

1. I wanted the most current cab and drivetrain configuration at the time for the 3rd gen trucks (08). That being some upgraded steering components and other minor suspension updates. The ECM at the time was also just before they loaded the "bootloader lock" in the 09 release.

2. I was getting an auto and wasn't keen on spending another $1500 to make the 48RE to the point where I felt I could install and use an exhaust brake (another $1200). I could have gone with the manual, but know I was going to have to get a clutch eventually as the dual mass stuff is not known for long life.

I was hesitant with the 6.7 honestly, as in early 09 they were still getting the hickups out of the early 07 versions. Turbos, EGR problems, but I figured I was going to take care of the emissions before I got it. I had the $700 saved for the Smarty ready to go.

Now that I have towed with both my 97 and the 08, the 08 with the 6 spd auto (with manual control) and the exhaust brake is just too handy. Not to mention I needed the cab space for the family.

No question the HPCR 5.9 engines are good. The 06-07 units seem to have the least amount of issues and upgrades to make them do whatever you want are plentiful. Making a reliable truck out of that year is not hard and if you aim to stay stock or near it, investment won't be large.

What is the life of the truck going to be for you? That may help make the decision a little more clear.

Hope that helps..
