5.9 or 6.7? What to buy????

A friend of mine is in the market for a new truck. He can either go with the last 5.9 auto on the lot or a new 6.7 auto. He was curious of how well the auto will hold up in the 5.9? I told him to save the $6,000 and get the 5.9 with out all that new emissions crap. Also the 5.9 has the longest track record for diesel pickups and has proven itself to be reliable, strong, and the best dam diesel in a pickup today. The problem comes with the old 4 speed auto, that is where the question comes into play. I told him it can have some small cheap upgrades to it and make it as strong as a tank. What do you all think?

Na, get the new 6.7 with the higher geared G56 and 3.42's. Then tell him to put some 285's on...

The 5.9 has been refined over and over, even the difference between my 05 and 07 is noticeable for the better. My 05 had 70k miles of towing and 315 tires, and not a single problem with the auto trans. I don't know anything about the 6.7 except for the little that I've read on this forum, however the dealer (Finance Manager) told me they did have emmisions problems, and the 08's will be better than the 07's.

I'd get the 5.9, but that's what I have.

5.9! Plain and simple! If he is worried about the trans, with the $6 grand difference he can use that money saved and build him a bullet proof auto.

DO NOT GET THE 6.7L !!! I bought one in June, traded it off in July (put 18,000 on it) WAY TO MUCH EMISSIONS B/S and no knowledge to back it up. Left me stranded several times, and the notorious check engine light came on 100 times and the only thing they could say is, "if it's not blinking don't worry about it!" I did so much research, it left me psychologicaly drained. PLUS you need a college degree to understand "Regeneration"

I now have my 07' 5.9L, 48re (works good, just dont care for it when towing) and couldn't be happier... 3 months and 52,000 miles... 12-14 towing, 20-22 empty

I was very impressed with the power and turbo of the 6.7L... just needs time and more upgrades to eliminate the exhaust system.

After finally buying a "new" truck, I have decided I will never work with another dealership again! Dodge Service is absolutey the worst ever! The only reason I stay in a Dodge is what's under the hood.

Just my .02...

I talked to a guy who traded in his 05 5.9 for an 07 6.7. Both autos. Loves the 6.7 and says it's much quieter.

I know another guy who's had several Cummins and trades in every 2-4 years. He's on at least his 5th CTD and always gets autos. He tows his 12K 5th wheel to FL every year for the winter as he's retired. He bought an 07 5.9 before he couldn't get one. He had no interest in the 6.7. I'm guessing he's never had any problems with his autos, although I found it interesting he didn't want to wait for the 68RE instead of the 47RH, 47RE and 48RE's he's had. FWIW, he could afford the extra $$ for the 6.7 & 68RE.

If I was in the market and wanted an auto, I think I'd wait a year and see what owners are saying about the 6.7 and the 6 speed. The 6 speed auto would be tempting if I didn't like to row.

How was that for help?
