Is it OK to use the 4 wheel drive when the streets are wet for better traction? Is the 4x4 intended to be used in this fashion from time to time? Also, what is the max speed limit while in 4x4. Considering a 2004.5 4x2 upgrade to 2006 4x4.

 

I slip mine in 4 high some times when it's raining really hard for better traction. You can shift in to 4 high @ any speed under 50 mph. Not too sure how fast you can go, but I've had mine to 65-70. NEVER EVER use it on dry pavement!

 

Mines been 100+mph in 4hi many times at the drag strip. Of course that was in a straight line. I have used 4hi in very heavy rain. If it starts binding too much on turns, I just take it out.

 

I have manual shifter, but it releases pretty quick with no acceleration.

 

I use mine when its wet out. so I can take off without spinning

 

4x4 in the rain??? Must have some prety poor tires. I have a heavy foot and I have never been to the point where I thought I needed 4x4 for taking off on wet pavement. Yes I can spin the tires eisier on wet pavement but I have never found a need for 4x4 on just wet pavement and darn sure not for driving down the road. Now yesterday on the way to work was a diferent story. 6+ inches of rutted up snow on the road. Thats what 4x4 is for not ,,,,,,,,,,rain???

 

You shouldn't have to back up to disengage it. My 03 was a manual shifter and all I had to do was take it out of 4-hi and put it in 2-hi and no problem, even while rolling. same with my 05 with the electronic transfer

 

Um... let see. 8000# truck 85% of it on the front wheels. Sometimes upwards of 400hp average. Try to pull out of a driveway in heavy traffic in the rain without 4wd and try not to get creamed.

P.S. If the drivetrain is strong enough for THIS I'm not too worried about hurting it in the rain. That's why it's there, for incresed traction, not increased traction in snow or mud only.

 

Ya I use mine in the rain just for taking off.If I am pulling out on the highway amd I have to get going to get out there.I just reach down and shove it 4wd and after I get going I take it out of 4wd.It is stupid not to use it since I have it.

 

I use mine when I feel it necessary. It's easy to have the back end slide out on you when it's only raining! I don't understand why people pay for an option and never or rarely use it.....?

I use 4x4 whenever 2wd does not give me enough power to the ground. Getting into traffic in anything but dry conditions is always safer, faster in 4x4 if your empty. Sometimes the frontdoes not completely drop out of 4x4 if there is a bit of load on the driveline when you switch out. It will drop out eventually or you can back up a truck length and it will pop out. I thinks its a sign of good engagement but infrequent use. I try to use mine whether I need it or not every week just to keep things moving. The front drive of Transfer case is the only part that doesn't move when you are not in 4x4 in these trucks. ks

 

I bought mine because I live where it snows.. I use it when the roads are snowy. Used it once in the dirt towing a 9000 lb trailer when I got stuck.. pulled right out. I looked at 4x2's and the price difference was less than $1000 for the 4x4... I see no problem using it in the rain, if you think you need it. I have yet to need it.. hell, most of the time I don't use it in the snow, makes it more fun.. like driving around a 7000 lb bobsled

You're gonna tear up your tires really quick!! Not to mention that you'll need an airport runway to make turns in 4x4. Save the T case for snowy roads, mud or deep sand. Anyway, a 4x4 looks better than a 2 WD, and resale is higher!
