4x4 smoke

Hey guys,
So as I am sure as you all know we got a hudge snow storm here in WV. I had the truck in my sig stuck 3 times and had to be pulled out with a bull dozer. When it is stuck and in 4WD high sometimes the wheels will not spin at all and black smoke ROLLS out the tail pipe. Then when I put it in 4WD low they will spin.

Now this is my first diesel truck so this could be perfectly normal but I want to make sure? My dodge hemi I had would sit and spin all day in 4WD high and seeing how this cummins 5.9 has way more torque I figured it would to but I am a newb to the diesels.

I learned one thing 35 inch tires and a diesel suck in heavy/deep wet snow. I WANT/NEED lockers like the power wagon has.

Thanks

Your issue is the TC (Torque converter). The stock fluid coupling is terrible. The factory TC is too loose. Upgrade your tranny and this problem will be solved.

The Smarty Jr is the source of your smoke. Turn it down or back to stock and your smoke will be reduced.

Are you sure all your wheels were stopped? You sure that one back and one front weren't turning?

Thanks for the replys.

I did not see/feel any wheels turning at all. My smarty is on the first setting so I don`t want to turn it down. Was not so much alarmed about the smoke but that the wheels did not turn. It was indeed a bunch of smoke. Heck it turned the snow black all around it.

Yes, same thing will happen if you back your truck up to a fairly tall curb and try to back on top of it from a dead stop. Truck just sits there...

*It's a real shame when your blocking traffic in an effort to back over the street curb and hook to the camper after a Nascar weekend and your Cummins "monster truck" won't even back over the d*mn curb without a rolling start!

Good to know...

I always thought that they just made too much torque for dodges crappy trans... Iirc they are made to take gasser torque.. not cummins torque which will make it slip.. anyways good info to know for when my stocker takes a dump

Ive also had this happen before. where I cannot climb a curb and have to shift into Low range just to avoid embarrasment that the mighty cummins cannot climb a curb... funny thing is ive never had that problem with my 5 speed.. it will spin the tires up and over the curb easy... the auto will just smoke.. and youll smell somethin burnin in the trans...

god i need to get a built auto.. gotta just finish the 12v first.. or with my luck the stocker will crap in a few weeks...

Chaz..... sounds like you are speaking from experience

Anyway, it does sound like the trans is just slipping.

Agreed, after installing these 5100s I have in the garage (with Lorenz coil replacements) and the Garmon's...I figure it will be a whole new truck! Can't wait!
