4x4 problems

when i put my truck in 4wd and turn the wheels (on snow) there is some chunking, clicking noise in the front end. kinda sound like gravel under the center caps almost. could this be bad u- joints or carrier bearings. i really havent had the time to tear the front end apart to see so i need a starting point. by the way there is no funny noises what so ever in 2wd. and it doesnt sound like it coming from the transfer case. the truck has aprox 85,000 mi.

gotta clarify something, when you mean turn the wheel, do you mean as the wheels start to roll or turn the steering wheel and the wheels turn right or left. Did you notice any leaks from the inside of the wheel area (alxe seal, bearing seal)? Do you have automatic or manual locking hubs? If the noise only happens when you are in 4wd, I would check out the hub area.

Auto lock hubs????? Are you sure? Did you have them installed after you bought the truck? Please tell me more about them.

I'll throw my vote in for the CV joint as well.

Gravel in a hubcap is exactly what mine sounded like when it went.
