which 4x4 to get?

Hey I'm getting ready to pick up my cummins this month. I'll be picking up a cc/sb 4x4.

Which 4x4 should I get? on the fly or shifter on the floor. I've never had a 4x4 before. (reason why im selling my f250)

Anyway my buddy has an 06 f350 with it on the fly and he has never had a problem with it. But I still don't trust it.

I'll be using the 4x4 alot for towing the boat and for playing offraod( no mud just sand)

ALso how do I matain the 4x4 system how often should I change the fluids?

thanks for the help .

On the fly! I love mine. It is smooth and easy to use. almost 60,000 miles, no problems.

Just for clarification, you can shift either "on the fly". As far as electronic shift or lever actuated, I've had both with no trouble out of either method. The technology has come a long way since the old push button Chevy truck and Ford Exploder shifting problems. Get what you want. If you buy a Laramie optioned truck you'll likely have the electronic.

The manual shift is engaged as soon as you move the lever ,the electronic takes about 3-5 seconds to engage, but if your truck is an automatic then with the electric shift you will have an extra seat up front with no transfer case lever in the way of someones feet .

Huh?? Where are you getting this information? My 273 HD electric switches virtually instantaneously, MUCH faster than the manual levers I've had in all my previous 4x4s (Jeep, 2 previous Dodges, and Ford F350). In particular, my 97 2500 Ram V10 with the 241 HD sometime took 2-3 seconds to engage, and up to 10 seconds to disengage.

As was posted above, electronic shift reliability has come a long way.

The manual shifter will always be more reliable. Every 4x4 failure I have seen on the beach has been an electronic shifter.

If you go from 2 hi to 4 hi, it's instantaneous. There’s only a delay when going to low range.

I'll repost what I posted above. BOTH systems on our Rams are very reliable.

This war will go on and on and they both work great , it just comes down to personal preference . I think most guys like to think they made a good decision and got the best set up but when it comes down to it both have very little trouble . I have drove the manual for years and always disliked the wasted floor space but the only trouble I have had with it is the linkage to 4 low freezing up from lack of use and a little penetrating oil fixed that . The new electric's have been real nice and I for one would order it again but you will not go wrong with either . That's my 2 cents worth , good luck on what ever you get .

IMHO - it's a truck!!! If you are looking for foo foo parts buy a Cadillac!

Just as was previously mentioned, there is just something about shifting the truck by level than by ****. There's a slight loss of room w/ an Auto and Manual floor shift. If she's cute and your not married, it just gives you an excuse to have her leg closer to yours!

True, and if you're married to a girl who is a little on the "large" side and beer, distance, and makeup are her three best friends, you can use the "shifters and stuff" as an excuse to keep her on her side of the truck.
