48RE Trans Question

Don’t know if this is normal or not. I’ve noticed that the trans won’t shift into 4th or OD (can’t tell – tried to count) until 50mph. Around town it always sounds like it's stuck in 3rd unless I take my foot off the pedal. The rev's will jump right back up again as soon as I touch the pedal again. At 40 - 45mph the rpm’s are at 1900 or so. Once I hit 48 - 50 it will shift and I can hear a big difference in sound from the engine, the rpm’s drop to 1400 and it takes off like a rabbit. As soon as I get below 45mph and start pushing on the pedal to bring the speed back up it will downshift again until I hit 50 again. Sorry for the long explanation and sounding so dumb, but it’s my 1st diesel.
I only have 73K on the truck. Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes, the slip seems annoying. Once locked you really feel the power, but until then it feels sloppy. The torque converter slips until about 2000 RPM to allow the turbo to spool up fast, which is great for under 40mph, but sucks between 40 to 55mph until it locks.
You can override this with a "TC Lockup Switch" (do a search)...

I also bet you coast when you lift off the throttle and you're around 40 mph huh?
That part I luv. It helps a bunch with mpg's. Put in a mystery switch and learn to use it... It'll come in real handy for the exact issues you have.

After adjusting the bands, mine shifted very crisp, not the sloppy feeling it had previously. It seems from different threads on here its generally the pressure solenoid or the bands not adj as the major problem.Mine does not hunt anymore, upshifts and downshifts immediately, very nice.

Your right T & T, it doesnt shift hard, its just the TC wont lock up uuntil 50 or so. Just annoying while drive around town @ 35-40.
No problems on highway with or without trailer. Thanks all -- lots of good info. Not sure about the lockout switch. Too munch in town driving to keep remember to turn it off. The bad part (I think) is that I only work 6 miles from home. Down one hill, up the next. Its like living in a bowl
. I try to get it up on the highway once a week to blow it out.

Because of the tire size, my trans doesn't lock until 55. Very annoying because most of my commute is between 45 and 55mph.
I have all the parts to build a lockup switch, but can't find the time to install.
The way I am setting it up is that it will have two switches, one that closes part of the circuit when just a sligh amount of throttle is touched, and the other is a steering-wheel button that will close the rest of the circuit and lock the TC.
The function is that the TC will only manually lock under throttle and when a momentary steering-wheel button (switch) is pressed (need to meet both conditions for it to work).
It is a safety so that it will unlock when you remove your foot off the petal. makes it more difficult to stall the motor. I may also use a locking relay that unlocks when the break is pressed (another safety feature).
In theory it should work well.

This is why i'm putting is a low stall converter. I can't stand when driving 35-45 mph, and the converter is not locked up, how high the stall is. It's just annoying. I talked to Goerend, and he said one of his low stall, single disk converters will do the trick. Lowers stall speed 600-800 rpm's. He said I can even add 70 more hp before needing to to a up graded valve body. While I have the trans out though, i'll put in a new high strength lever, apply strap and anchor. Only $85.00 more. So if someday I want more power. I just have to put in the valve body.
