48RE Solenoid Replacement-Fluid Change-Help!

Ok, so come to find out after calling my wonderful dealer (sarcasm!), it is not required to change the transmission fluid with a solenoid replacement. I thought the two went hand in hand. So now I have to do it because the dealer wants $300. My dealer is a joke. I am due for the 30,000 mile service. I already changed the oil and diffs. I have never done this trans change before and have spent all morning searching the forum and trying to figure out how much fluid and what exactly I need to change. Can you guys please help me out???? I think I got the idea on changing the transmission fluid, but I also read where it would be good to change the transfer case. What does this involve? How much additional fluid? Where is it located? You guys are very knowlegdable and I have learned so much from all of you. Can you help a "green" wrenchhead out here?

Why are you changing the sol's? If you just changed your fluid, save it and reuse it. There is an allen head plug in the bottom of the T-case and one part way up to fill it. I think you will need about 3-4 quarts. I did a 2005 last weekend and I think it took 3.5??? Not sure though.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, solenoid has already been replaced, but not the fluid!

By solenoid I assume you mean governor pressure solenoid which is in the pan so not sure how they managed to change it without changing the fluid. 7qts for tranny and filter and 2.5 for transfer case. Good idea to have an extra qt or 2 on hand just in case though. Just did mine today - see results here...

I agree. 10 qts at $4.33=$43.30. Is it worth it? I don't think it is.

ok, I am confused Dodge changed my solenoid. But when I called them they said that they did not change my fluid. Does this mean they reused my trans fluid??????

Unless they used recovered fluid, they had to change it if they changed a solenoid.

A Lot of times if the trans fluid was just changed and you have something like the solenoid or transducer go out, you can reuse the fluid if it still looks good. If Dodge didn't put new fluid in, then most likely that is what they did. I didn't read your sig, do you have a mag-hytec or another deep pan that has the drain plug on it? If not you should look into one. It is really simple to change your fluid and filter. And it is definitely worth changing just for preventative maintenance. Also, when you do your fluid change yourself, you are not doing a full fluid change. If you want a full fuild exchange, then you need to go have your tranny flushed.

WHy did you need to replace the solenoid? Was the tranny hunting between 1st and second gear? I brought mine in for this TSB,
http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2007/21-009-07.htm it was at 29,500 miles. I had them do a transmission service at this time since the pan was dropped, all it cost me was the cost of a new transmission filter.

Check the repair receipt and see if atf was billed to the warr. repair order. If it was charged out, I would ask them why the new fluid wasn't put in the truck.
