48RE...No power transfer in any gear

Hi all. Not sure whether to be ****** off or not. Seems like the trans died, but did so after a long trip, right outside my doorstep. Almost anyway; It's parked across the street.

I have a 2003 HO 4x4 3500 dually, bone stock.

Really weird symptoms. Stopped and prepared to back up into my long downhill driveway with the 5th wheel on, and the truck simply wouldn't move. The engine revved but there was no power to the wheels.

It bumped a couple of times like it was going to lock into reverse and move, then nothing. In any gear.

I checked the electrical connectors, the shift linkage, the throttle linkage, and the transfer case linkage in case there was an obvious failure. I had been travelling over bumpy logging roads with the 5th. There was nothing amiss.

I have to check trans fluid level, but it's never been an issue before.

Any ideas what might be going on here?

Thanks,

Chay

Checked the trans fluid..clear pink and nice, but way too high. It was not this way before. It's at least 2" above the high mark on the dip stick, idle in neutral.

Tconverter??

Sounds a lot like a broken input shaft unfortunately.

Is yours an automatic with 4wd? I just had to replace transfer case because front seal in xfer case blew out and all of the tranny fluid in it pushed into the transmission causing it to be over full. I did not experience tranny failure, but it could be the cause of the overfill in the tranny.

Yes it's 4x4. Interesting!

It could be an input shaft. What is weird though is that this occurred at a very low torque. I was just shifting to get ready to back up the trailer.

Also interesting is that the engine revs absolutely clean...no grinding or sound of any kind.

Well, I pulled the trans pan and it had lots of metal in it.

There was even a small flat piece of metal down there. Maybe a piece of band or steel ring? Not sure.

The transfer case was full, and the colour of the fluid was different so I don't think that's my issue.

I'm taking it to a local trans place, will have them install Goerend parts.

I think the worst part will be waiting for shipping!

Update:

The reason for the no power was that the bolts backed out of the oil pump.

Also, the middle shaft was cracked. Not sure how this happened.

Back together and running well now.
