I can't answer your question directly, but I can say that I have 3.73s with 285/75/17s and the gearing is a bit high for heavy towing. First is slow to move out and OD is only good for slight grades or the EGT and locomotive roar really come on strong. Stock tires and the 3.42s might be good though. Or bigger tires and no towing.

I have been running a set for a while now....I LOVE THEM. My truck is 4x2 and for me crusing at 2500 rpm @ 85 w/3.73 was too high;. I cruise @ 2175 now @ 85 mph and have picked up about .6 mpg. For your truck though....19.5" wheels with 4.10 I would go 3.73. The 3.42 would be a bit too tall for you.

I don't think 3.42's with a auto is a good mix if planning to tow.

I had 3.42's on my Chevy pickup and absolutely hated it for towing. Would always downshift on a slight grade and even during a headwind.

Thanks for your imput, the 19.5 tires are 32 inches tall and only added about 3mph at 65. Don't tow often and when I do its a 5k boat and rarely a travel trailer of about the same weight. Used to pull a 14k 5th wheel with it and the 4.10 were great. Want better economy, only geat about 11.5 in town and about 13 highway.

I had 3.73s with 35" tires and hated the gearing (I think it makes it around 3.20 or 3.30). No torque for pulling passes or hills. I put in 4.10's to get back to stock ratio's and it is great. I don't run around at 85 though.

I also had 3.42's in a chevy tahoe and hated it. It ALWAYS was down shifting.

You should find someone with 3.73 gears that needs 4.10s and swap them.

I need to do this like tony ^ said you loose some umph with 35's and 3.73 gears.

My combo is basically like running 3.42 gears on the stock sized tires. I bet it wouldn't be too bad if my 35 inch rolling stock wasn't so heavy.
