2007 First start when cold/ Poping
Does anyone else notice there truck poping every once and a while when you first start it cold while its idling? mine will do it a 1-3 times while its warming up, its pretty loud, kinda like a back fire?
If it's really cold yes. I've noticed it. Do a search on cold weather starting. I'm sure I've read about it before. There is also a feature which is a 3 cylinder or 4 cylinder idle when it's really cold. Sounds really funky.

I believe what you guys are referring to as a popping sound is the grid heater cycling on and off. Watch your amp guage in your truck and see if the sound corresponds to when the grid turns on or off. Mine does it as well, but it's more of almost a misfire sound. I know that it's not, but that is what it sounds like. My thoughts would be that it's from the large amp draw. My .02!
Not with mine. I just got back from flagstaff where it got to 12* the morning I started mine. No popping, it fired right up and went to high idle on it's own. Are you hearing the popping out the back of the exhaust or from the engine compartment?

The noise everyone is hearing seems to be centered around 07 5.9's. I've never heard of anyone with an 06 have this noise. And it's not a popping, but more of a shake in the truck like a stumble in the motor. (If that makes sense to anyone.) I'm not worried about it. Mine's got 28k more miles till I start to worry!
Mine has done it also, seems to happen when:
Temps are in the 30's " AND " truck has not been started for awhile(overnight or all day)
Only seems to occur once during the first 10 sec. or so as the truck seems to get a normal idle.
I've noticed I can almost make it happen under these conditions if I give it throttle within those first 5-10 sec.
I thought maybe just excessive exhaust moisture combined with back-pressure. It's at these times that I notice slight exhaust vapor briefly. This diesel doesn't seem to have as much moisture if any in the exhaust as gasoline engines do at cold start-ups. Can't say if that is what it is related to; but it does seem to happen at the same time I see slight exhaust moisture.

I've heard a 03 do it.Its a pop like a carbed engine poping back through the intake.Sounded to be like the grid heater is lighting unburnt fuel vapor.Thats the reason for Caution DONT NOT USE STARTING FLIUD as the grid heater will or can explode it.Thats my opinion anyway.
That would be pretty tough to do since there is no fuel in the intake tract unless its being kicked back thru the intake valves. Possibly oil from the turbo until it warms up?
All years of the CR seem to do it for some reason that no one has figured out yet. Its not a shake, or rattle, its a POP like a backfire. One of the great CR mysteries.

It's not specific to 07's. I have experienced it on my 04.5, 06, and 07. It's like a skip or burp, and not consistent. I would only guess that it is like a single cylinder miss that occurs randomly. It has nothing to do with the grid heater.
My '07 5.9 started "popping" recently at random times. It idles like crap out of nowhere. Shouldn't be the fuel filter as it was changed less than 10,000KM's ago. It also will blow white smoke at start up sometimes and run like crap until the high idle kicks in.
