Poping Sound While Turning
HEY ALL I HAVE BEEN READING YOUR THREADS FOR A WHILE BUT THIS IS MY FIRST. WELL I WAS DRIVING TO WORK TODAY AND WENT TO TURN INTO THE PARKING LOT AND HEARD A LITE POPING SOUND. WHEN I TURNED INTO MY PARKING SPOTI HEARD IT AGAIN. THEN AFTER WORK I WAS STILL WORRIED ABOUT THE SOUND SO WHEN I DROVE HOME I DROVE WITH THE WINDOW DOWN AND THE RADIO OFF AND COME TO FIND OUT THE POPING NOISE WAS THERE EVERYTIME I TURNED. AND I DON;T KNOW IF IT IS A NORMAL THING BUT I DON;T THINK IT COULD BE. I ALSO NOTICED IT HAPPENS TO WHEN I HIT SPEED BUMPS SO IF YOU GUYS COULD POINT ME IN A DIRECTION TO CHECK THAT WOULD BE GREAT. I WANNA GET THIS BEFORE IT GETS OUT OF HAND.
THANKS
THANKS
SORRY THERE YOU GO ITS REALLY BUGGING ME AND NOW THAT YOU BRING UP THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE HAS BEEN PRETTY HARSH IT JERKS SO MUCH WHEN I TRY TO TURN IT YARDS THE WHEEL OUT OF MY HANDS ITS LIKE ITS HANGING UP.

I take it that you dont have a lift. Those usually lead to tie rod ends going out being over worked from big tires. But I would first check you tire rod ends anyway. If it pops when you turn the wheel while sitting still then have someone help you. Dont jack up the truck. Let them turn the wheel while you sit under the front, listening and touching the tie rods and other connecting parts. (BE CAREFULL NOT TO GET HURT!) I bet you have a worn tie rod end. Another check is to jack up the truck and move the tires, checking for any bearing play and ball joint play.
If the 4wd is not on and you still have a jerking wheel when you turn then you have a bad u joint at one of the front wheels.
dont leave it to long, they make a mess when they break and a bad u joint in that location can take out the axle seals which are no fun to replace.
Good Luck and welcome to the board!!

well i went through and tightened all the bolts in the front end like bama said and it is still there. so theres got to be something else wrong i think it could be the bearings or the u-joints because i have been driving without the radio since this has all come about and there seems to be a grinding or wearing sound coming from the right front wheel area.
as for the 4x4 it is really harsh when steering. like jerk the wheel out of my hand bad when its engaged. and i know 4x4's will jerk some when turning but not this bad. and if its not engaged it doesn't jerk if just pops like i said before. i'm thinking this could be a bigger problem than i orignally thought.

I have a similar problem with my rather new 2003.
It seems that when I turn right there is a clunking noise right under the floorpan. When I put on the brakes a little bit the noise goes away for the most part.
I took it back to the dealer and he thinks it could be in the brakes but I am not convinced.

A good way to check the u joints is to jack the vehicle up witht he wheels turned and then spin the wheels by hand, that will shoe a bad u joint 90% of the time. If theres a bad bearing it should also show up as a rough sound and the wheel not spinning smoothly.

Your dealer may be right about it being the brakes. If you have a rotor that is slightly warped it will "pick up" the pad as it goes by the warped portion of the rotor then drop it giving you the clunking noise. There should be anti rattle clips on the pads to prevent that and that also may be the problem.
