3rd gen's sound like crap with a stright pipe...when compared to a 2nd gen with a centered exhaust manifold...the drone in the cab will be loud and unbearable...especially towing. The tone outside wont really be anything like your '01. If your going to do it definitely make sure to cut the muffler and cat off clean so you can put them back on easily.

With a 3rd gen exhaust manfiold i like the sound with no cat and the stock muffler...silent in the cab but a nice deep rumble outside.

The only way to make your dad's '06 sound like your '01 is to put a 24v exhaust manifold on it.

This is all my opinion of course...i have run just about every exhaust setup on my 07...The only thing that doesnt drone i have found are the Donaldson 40" and 51" and the stock muffler.
