2006 straight pipe

My truck is a 2001 H.O. 6-spd it was straight piped when I bought it used. My dad has a 2006 auto it still has its muffler and cat. My dad loves the way my exhaust sounds. I was wondering if his truck will be too loud if I get it straight piped and will it sound good. We don't do much towing with his truck yet because it has no gooseneck hitch, but we intend to in the future. Any advice would be appreciated.

I just helped a friend straightpipe his 06. It's pretty comparable to being as loud as my straightpiped 2000 from the outside. His is a whole lot quieter in the cab though. I think it sounds pretty good.

Thanks for the advice, I am actually driving his truck while I'm away at college and he is using mine. So I thought it might make a nice surprise for his birthday, to bring his truck back minus the muffler and cat. I think he will like it.

Be sure to make nice clean cuts (I'd use a Saws-All, not a torch) so that you can put it back to stock if needed.

my 2006 also has a resonator on it, I think your may too. So even after muffler delete it is still quite a bit quieter than my last Dodge was after the muffler delete.

I believe only the Megacabs have the resonator...At least my 06 QC didn't have one, Cat and Muffler only, now Cat only.

You are correct about the Megacabs being the only one's with resonators.

I also agree about keeping it easy to put back to stock if he doesn't like the way it sounds.

The stock exhaust on an 06 is 4" already, so all you need to do is tie in between the downpipe and tailpipe. What we did was bought a muffler delete pipe from Geno's Garage and a chunk of 4" stainless from Summit Racing. We got the cat pulled off from the downpipe without cutting, but ended up cutting the flange on the muffler with a tubing cutter because the pipe was crushed. The muffler delete gives you a belled end to slip over one side and a new hanger. We then used a 4" band clamp from Summit to tie the muffler delete pipe and the straight 4" together.

When I did mine, I just used a sawzall and a welder. I knew the muffler and resonator weren't ever going back on...

My 06 is got a nice growl to it and all I did is muffler delete. Cat still intact and have the resonator. It can be a bit loud when getting on it but not bad other wise. Very slight drone when pulling heavy in the mountains

3rd gen's sound like crap with a stright pipe...when compared to a 2nd gen with a centered exhaust manifold...the drone in the cab will be loud and unbearable...especially towing. The tone outside wont really be anything like your '01. If your going to do it definitely make sure to cut the muffler and cat off clean so you can put them back on easily.

With a 3rd gen exhaust manfiold i like the sound with no cat and the stock muffler...silent in the cab but a nice deep rumble outside.

The only way to make your dad's '06 sound like your '01 is to put a 24v exhaust manifold on it.

This is all my opinion of course...i have run just about every exhaust setup on my 07...The only thing that doesnt drone i have found are the Donaldson 40" and 51" and the stock muffler.

76 is correct the first time your dad tows he is going to kill you. be nice to him and get a 5" turbo back piping from fbd and a donoldson m090535 muffler, the muffler is $70 to $95 depending on where you get it and the fbd is less than $300 you can install it by your self on a Saturday with a minimum of tools and still have time for beer

I have done the muffler delete on my 07 and its kinda strange how it is quiet in the cab and kinda quiet near the exhaust pipe but if you are into the throttle and in the line of fire of the exhaust pipe, its deafening. It was cool for the first few months but I have heard a few trucks on the road that have stock exhaust with a muffler "upgrade" and some sound really good. Just have to catch one of those trucks and see what they have for a muffler. Although it did feel like the truck ran better without the muffler, it probably didnt. Ive heard the cat removal is the better step if you can do that in your county.....

I have 4" streight on my 97, it sound great to me, cam proble helps, my 03 is streight piped, i dont really notice it in the cab unless im on the throttle, but the 2nd gens sound best to me streight piped. I tow with both trucks and the 97 is louder of the 2, i really dont noctice much for drone on the 03 with the gn hooked to it, maybe the radio is turn up to much

Same here. Our 07's got no cat, just an aero turbine 4040. It emits a very deep low growl at idle. I find it almost pleasant in normal daily unloaded driving. But the further into the throttle you get, the louder it becomes. I would not want to tow very far with it. It can be used to frighten stupid drivers, if desired.
