My 2006 cummins diesel starts fine but will only idle for about 5 seconds then it shuts off. Do you think it could be the fuel filter? I only have 11,500 miles on the truck.

I thought I said that already....
Sometimes the easiest answer is the correct one...
Seriously, it's either the fuel filter or the fuel pump in the tank. Either way, you've gotta start by changing the filter... Nuff said...

Yes you do - it tells you how to in the owner's manual. It's easy - i think you have to turn the key to the on position and wait several seconds to let the fuel pump run and purge any air from the system. You don't have to open any valves or anything like on older engines though. I think you have to turn the key off and repeat this a few times before trying to start because the fuel pump shuts off after a little bit when the key is left on. You may even have to crank the engine a little when you turn the key. The fuel pump automatically pumps thje air out and back to the tank thru the return line.
Also when you changed the filter did you drain the bowl and wipe it out and clean off the water in fuel sensor? It also helps if you pour some fuel in the bowl and fill it before you install the cap. Hope you figure it out.

I did cycle the pump using the key a few times before cranking it. I did not put fuel in the bowl after the new filter was installed. I did drain the bowl, but did not wipe the sensor. I will keep you posted.

Well turns out it was the fuel filter. The new one I put in had a damaged o-ring so it wouldn't seal. Replaced that again and it is ok now. I hear the new diesel fuel in california has caused a lot of problems with the fuel filters.
